Tripurari Sharan is new DG Doordarshan

New Delhi: Tripurari Sharan has joined as Director General of Doordarshan, a post which was temporarily held by B P Mandoli after Ms Aruna Sharma had to quit in the wake of allegations of irregularities in the award of broadcasting rights for the Commonwealth Games held in October last year.

Sharan, 50, is a 1985 batch IAS officer of the Bihar cadre. He has also served as Director Film and Television Institute of India. He has been appointed for a term of three years. However, no name has been finalised for the post of Director General All India Radio, but Mr Mandoli is top on the list of the panel for the post approved by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, a source said. Dimapur police nabs 1 with arm, ammo

Kohima: Dimapur police,along with Mahila Police (Indian Reserve Battalion) of the Nagaland Armed Police (NAP), on Friday apprehended one person for illegal possession of arm and ammunition.

According to official sources here today, the police personnel noticed suspicious movement of the arrested in the Railway Station area and on interrogation they recovered one .22 pistol and some bullets. On interrogation, the accused confessed that he had been directed by one ‘deputy director’ of NSCN (Khole) to extort money from business establishments in the city.

He also revealed that he had been recently released from jail in connection with an earlier case of extortion which was registered at Medziphema Police Station.

A case has been registered against the accused under the Arms Act and for attempt to commit extortion. Further investigation was on. (UNI)

MDPF preparing for state Assembly election-2012

Imphal: The Manipur Democratic People’s Front (MDPF) is preparing for the state Assembly election-2012, party president Dr Tonsana Sharma informed.

The Chief Election Commissioner is also expected to arrive here on August 5 next to assess the ground situation.

He said the term of the present government ends on March 15, 2012 and elections are supposed to be held a month prior to the expiry of the term of the present Government.

He said campaigns are being carried out by intending candidates spending huge expenses from their own pockets. He said such huge expenses should be accounted for in the election expenditure of the candidates and he would make the visiting team aware of it. (UNI)

EENPO sticks to decision of ‘Frontier Nagaland’

Kohima: The Eastern Nagaland People’s Organization (ENPO) has resolved to stick to its May 25, 2007 decision of demanding a full-fledged state of ‘Frontier Nagaland’.

The decision comes close on the heels of the one taken by the Nagaland Cabinet on July 23 to recommend to the Centre for creation of an Autonomous Council for areas encompassing Tuensang, Mon, Longleng and Kiphire districts. (UNI)
