World’s oldest person turns 115

London: The world’s oldest person – Besse Cooper – has turned 115. On the secret to her long life, she said: “I mind my own business. And I don’t eat junk food.”

Cooper’s birthday was recently celebrated at her residence in Monroe, Georgia, The Telegraph said.

A Guinness World Records representative delivered Cooper a plaque that certifies her as the oldest person on earth.

Her son, 76-year-old Sidney Cooper said: “She still remembers things and thinks clearly and talks. But she has her good days and her bad days. I’d say she sleeps about 80 percent of the time.”

Born in Tennessee in 1896, Besse Cooper moved to Georgia during World War I. She married her husband Luther in 1924, and they had four children. Today, she has 12 grandchildren and more than a dozen great-grandchildren. (IANS)

Teenager asked Facebook friends to kill one million cops

London: A British teenager has been sentenced to two-and-a-half years in jail for asking his 2,000 Facebook “friends” to kill one million policemen during the London riots, a media report said.

Amed Pelle, 18, incited 2,197 “friends” to commit violence and looting in Nottingham. He claimed he was inspired by a film in which criminal gangs take over London, the Daily Express reported.

The teenager posted three messages on his Facebook profile just before violence erupted in Nottingham, the Nottingham Crown Court heard.

The first two read “Nottz Riot whose on it?”, and “Kill one black youth, we kill a million Fedz (police), riot til we own cities”.

The media report said the second message was probably a reference to Mark Duggan, the suspected drug dealer whose death sparked the riots earlier this month.

At first, he told police the messages were a joke, but eventually pleaded guilty to encouraging or assisting violent disorder.

Pelle told police he had watched the film Shank in which violent gangs of youths overrun London in 2015.

He has been sent to a young offenders’ institution. (IANS)

Nurse attacks kids with knife, injures eight

Beijing: Eight children were hurt in Shanghai city Monday when a nurse attacked them with a knife.

A worker at an informal child care centre for migrant workers in Shanghai began slashing children with a knife, wounding eight children, one seriously, China Daily reported.

The official Xinhua News Agency and other reports said the attack occurred at noon Monday at a centre in Shanghai’s suburban Minhang district, home to many migrant workers. None of the children suffered life-threatening injuries.

The reports said the attacker had suffered a “psychotic episode” and had been taken into custody.

The children have been sent to a local hospital where they are out of danger.

Chinese schools and nurseries have ramped up security following a spate of gory rampages in schools and other public places that left dozens of people dead and more injured. (IANS)

Gangster nabbed after cops see photos on Facebook

London: One of Italy’s 100 most-wanted crooks was tracked down and arrested after his girlfriend posted their holiday photos on Facebook, a media report said.

Salvatore D’Avino, 39 – a member of the Naples mafia – was on the run for 10 years.

He and his 31-year-old pregnant Moroccan girlfriend were holidaying in Marbella, Spain, and posted pictures on Facebook, The Sun reported.

Italian police spotted the photos on the social networking website, and their Spanish counterparts swooped to arrest D’Avino.

D’Avino is wanted for drug trafficking.

Angelo Mazzagatti, of Naples police, said: “He thought after a decade on the run he was home free. He wasn’t happy with his girlfriend. It was very easy to find them from photos of her standing in front of a restaurant sign.” (IANS)

Dubai: A restaurant in Dubai has set a new Guinness record by preparing the world’s largest doner kebab at 468 kg.

The Doner Restaurant set the new record said Guinness adjudicator Tarika Vara.

In an act of goodwill, the doner was distributed among charity organisations in Dubai, feeding more than 3,000 people.

Restaurant owner Rana Abdullah said: “It has pleased us to have won this title. It is also a pleasure to have helped out with charity in this holy month. I thank the Doner restaurant team for their dedication to the success of this project.” (IANS)

 ‘Clown-nose’ toddler undergoes surgery

London: A toddler in Britain who was left with a bright red ‘clown nose’ just weeks after she was born has been operated upon to make her nose look “like her mum’s”, a media report said Tuesday.

She had to put up with cruel taunts for three years because of a condition that left her with a bright bright red clown nose, Daily Mail reported.

Her mother had to resort to hiding Connie Lloyd’s face when they went to the doctors because people made “horrible” comments.

Now Connie has a chance to live life anew after surgery to remove the blemish that marked the existence of a tumour, the newspaper said.

Following the three-and-a-half hour operation in March, a delighted Connie proclaimed that she now had a ‘nose like her mum’s’, the Mail said.

“When we saw her nose we were amazed. She looked like a different child but we knew it was our Connie,” her mother, from Slough, Berkshire, said. (IANS)

Woman carrying 89 cigarette cartons held in Pak

Islamabad: A British Pakistani woman, who is a black belt in karate, was detained at Rawalpindi airport after she had a brawl with security staff who did not allow her to check-in 89 cigarette cartons.

Zakia Bibi, travelling to Manchester, became angry when she was told she could not take the cigarette cartons out of the country.

She pounced on a security staff and then attacked two others, the Dawn quoted airport sources as saying.

The woman was arrested, but not before her `karate skills’ caused panic.

CCTV footage showed her slapping a female security staff. She claimed that staff demanded money to clear her baggage, an allegation the staff denied. (IANS)
