Unmanaged wastes a nightmare for Agartala residents

Agartala: Garbage collections in Agartala Municipal Council (AMC) area remained halted for the eighth consecutive day on Tuesday following blockade by the residents around the existing dumping ground of the city.

According to a report, the stalemate continued even after several rounds of meeting with the residents of the area, civil administration, political leaders and AMC, as the resident did not agree with any further dumping in the ground that had become a serious threat to the public health over past few years. The residents became furious when a waste carrying vehicle of AMC ran over a woman in the area last week and they set the vehicle on fire.

The residents had been opposing the dumping in Hapania yard since 2005 as about 100 children had developed skin diseases and respiratory syndrome around the yards.

Meantime, the state government had identified a land-fill station in Nagicherra area of Agartala but the residents of the area had also opposed the plan to acquire the land for dumping besides, a few hectares of government land.

”Tripura State Pollution Control Board officials has been doing foul play with the residents of both Hapania and Nagicherra on dumping issue because despite our opposition on public health issue, the authority turned a blind eye and tried to forcefully continue dumping in Hapania and develop new yard in Nagicherra,” alleged Congress MLA Dilip Sarkar.

He alleged that the issue had also been taken up on several occasions with the government but they did not consider the demand for the past many years, which had compelled the residents to go on to put up resistant against dumping in residential areas. (UNI)
