Shillong: Irked over the Government’s indifference to the demand of the local people and the NGOs to reinstate Mawryngkneng BDO MS Sangma, who was recently transferred to Baghmara, the KSU Mawryngkneng and Eastern Central units on Friday locked the Block Development Officer at Mawryngkneng.

The NGOs had asked the Government to reinstate Sangma as the BDO of Mawryngkneng within December 5.

“The office will remain closed for two days and if the transfer order is not revoke then we will resort to other course of action,” KSU Eastern Central president Peter Lawai told reporters here on Friday.

Terming the transfer as an anti-people approach, the KSU has alleged the government of forcefully by-passing the Meghalaya Service Rules by transferring MS Sangma only after 6 months of his tenure as Mawryngkneng BDO. The Meghalaya Service Rules fixes the term of services of any BDO in a block at 3 years.

Condemning Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma for making a vague comment regarding the transfer order, KSU Mawryngkneng president Wallambok Kharsati said, “If every Garo MCS officer has to be transferred to Garo Hills before he/she gets promoted, then all Khasi MCS officers serving in Garo Hills should also be transferred to Khasi Hills before their promotion.”

It may be reminded that there are allegations that Sangma was transferred from Mawryngkneng only because he had tried to clean up the irregularities in MGNREGS implementation. Sangma has suspended the Village Employment Councils (VEC) of Mawryngkneng, Tynring and Thadan.

Surprisingly, 24 hours after the three VECs were suspended, Sangma was handed his marching orders.
