GUWAHATI: Fresh incidents of violence were reported in lower Assam districts even as the government on Tuesday recommended a CBI probe into the ethnic clashes, which have left 73 dead.

In the worst-affected Kokrajhar district, three persons were killed and two others injured when some persons opened fire on a group of people at Ranibuli village late last night while one more body was found today in neighbouring Chirang district, IGP (Law and Order) L R Bishnoi said. Indefinite curfew has been reimposed in Kokrajhar, while round-the-clock curfew continues in Chirang. Army continued flag marches in the morning in Kokrajhar, Chirang and Dhubri districts.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi told reporters here, “I have recommended a CBI probe into the incidents and now it is up to the Centre to take a final decision on instituting it.”

“In fact we took the decision of the first day when the violence broke out, but the then Home Minister P Chidambaram had reservation over engaging CBI in such cases. But, we (Assam Government) want a CBI probe as we suspect that there are many forces are involved in the violence. We want exemplary punishment to conspirators and perpetrators so that it becomes a lesson for the future,” Gogoi said.

Expressing grave concern over killing of three persons at Ranighuli on the border of Kokrajhar and Dhubri districts last night, Gogoi said the police and security forces have been ordered to confiscate all the illegal arms available with anyone in the violence-hit areas to prevent such incidents.

There have been reports about availability of illegal arms in the BTC areas with militants as well as former militants and other criminals. Gogoi informed that so far 170 persons have been arrested in relation to the violence and order had been issued to make preventive arrests of anti-social elements.

Meanwhile, the number of relief camps has come down to 245 from 340 with over 1.16 lakh violence-hit people returning to their respective villages within the last few days. The government has so far set up 95 fixed pickets of central paramilitary force personnel in vulnerable villages to provide round the clock security to people returning from relief camps.
