TURA: Following the recent signing of a peace treaty between the two influential students’ unions after their clash, the GSU is now blaming an unspecified political party for instigating and bringing about the outbreak of chaos and disorder in Tura and other parts of Garo Hills.

The GSU is demanding the District Administration and the Law and Order Department to identify and penalise the persons who had ransacked the GSU office.

“We condemn the miscreants who have involved themselves in the ransacking of GSU office at Chasingre and demand for the culprits to be penalised by law,” the GSU said.

It may be mentioned that a mob of enraged students had ransacked the GSU office on August 30 after some members of GSU had forcibly made off with the general secretary of the Tura Government College Students’ Union from the college premises.

Speaking of a possible political interference, the GSU said attempts were being made to destabilise the GSU as a whole by certain interested parties. The Union also mentioned that the press release announcing the dissolution of the GSU, Southern Zone, Baghmara was false and was just a handiwork of a handful of college students. The Union added that no one but the GSU CEC can dissolve a zonal unit.

“GSU will not listen to anyone, including students who have been politically brainwashed by this particular political body who wishes to use the name of GSU. We know that interested parties will want to keep the person they can sway in the GSU before the coming elections,” stated GSU and added that there are many parties who want to use the Union’s name for their election campaigns and use students for their own interests.

GSU has also announced of its shared aims with the bandh called in the entire North-East except for Assam on September 6 as directed by North Eastern Students’ Organization (NESO) to put pressure on the State Governments of North East and the Government of India to look into the matter of exodus of NE students from other parts of India.

The GSU is also taking part in the sit in demonstration in Shillong for the demand of ILP along with other organisations of Meghalaya.

“We appeal to the people of Garo Hills to bear with us as the problem is genuine and because the demographic balance of North East is changing too fast against the interest of the indigenous people,” the Union stated.
