SHILLONG: The State government has started monitoring and assessing the law and order situation in the state in view of the upcoming Assembly elections due in 2013.
The security assessment assumes significance in the wake of some members of the militant outfit ANVC (B) attacking Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee Working President Deborah Marak in her constituency in East Garo Hills district last week.
Heavily armed cadres of the breakaway faction of the Garo rebel outfit on Saturday attacked Marak following an altercation over holding of a public meeting at Rongbinggre across Simsang river in East Garo Hills.
Terming the attack as unacceptable, the State Chief Secretary WMS Pariat on Monday said the Government is collecting all the details on this incident.
Stating that the government would not tolerate the perpetrators of this kind of violence, he said security would be beefed-up in Garo Hills.
“Forces will be deployed in specific areas for conducting a free and fair election,” he said.
He informed that the discussions were on with the Election Commission and Union Home Ministry with regard to deployment of forces in Garo Hills and the state as a whole.
Reacting to a query on the grievances of the breakaway faction of the ANVC, the Chief Secretary said the parent outfit had submitted a memorandum to both the State Government and the Central Government and the matter was being examined.
“There are certain issues which need to be resolved before arriving at any decision,” he said.
The Chief Secretary made it clear that the memorandum was submitted by the ANVC and not by any splinter group.
Murder of non-tribal labourer: Referring to a recent incident in which a non-local labourer was allegedly killed by the members of the KSU, Pariat said no group in the state would be allowed to take law in their own hands.
“In this case law has proceeded as per requirement,” he said.
It may be mentioned that the State police have arrested two KSU members and a cab driver for their involvement in the murder.
