SHILLONG: Police have arrested two persons for posing as SOT personnel and robbing one person at Laitumkhrah.

The duo Danny Dkhar (28) of Madanriting and Robert Kharsati (32) of Smit had robbed one person of his mobile and other belongings at Dhankheti on November 22.

Additional SP (Crime) Vivek Syiem on Friday informed that the two accused had even forced the victim to withdraw money from his account from the ATM at Bawri complex.

As there was no money in the ATM, the duo took the victim to the ATM located at Malki and managed to withdraw Rs 500 from the victim’s account, Syiem said. Syiem also informed that the duo was arrested in connection with the kidnapping of a tourist taxi driver Pynshai Rymbai from Saw Lad near Madanriting at gun point on December 8. ‘It was during the course of the interrogation that they confessed to having posed as SOT personnel,” Syiem said.

“The tourist taxi driver was coming from Jaintia Hills to meet his relatives at Nazareth Hospital,” Syiem said, adding that the duo took the driver to Nazareth Hospital and demanded Rs 20,000 from his relatives.

The relatives paid only Rs 3000 after which the duo left the hospital with the driver, Syiem said, adding that the traffic police personnel of Laitumkhrah intercepted the two accused.

“The traffic personnel asked one of the accused to produce his driving license. The accused instead asked the tourist taxi driver to provide his driving license after which the traffic personnel took them to the police station,” the Additional SP informed.

After reaching the police station, the traffic personnel asked the two accused to collect the vehicle documents. When the two accused left, the tourist driver informed the traffic personnel that he had been kidnapped at gun point by the duo, Syiem said, while adding that police immediately swung into action and arrested the duo.

“During the course of the interrogation, the two confessed that they were carrying a gun. After seizing they weapon, we found that it was only a toy gun,” Syiem said. Police also seized a packet containing drugs from the possession of one of the accused.

Based on information provided by the duo, police arrested one John Baglary who supplied drugs to the two accused and later arrested the kingpin of the drug trade Zonglal Kipgen from whom police seized a gold tin containing heroine worth Rs 17,000 in the market, Syiem informed.
