SHILLONG: After hectic campaigns and endless public meetings, the tired candidates are engaging themselves in varied activities as they wait for the morning of Thursday, the day their fate would be revealed.

While some candidates have gone out of station to ease the tension, there are others who are sitting at home and analyzing their fortunes.

The Shillong Times spoke to some candidates to find out what they were doing at present.

MPCC president DD Lapang, who contested from Nongpoh, remains busy as usual.

“I am attending the MPCC office in Shillong. Besides making some analysis, I am also keeping in touch with the AICC leaders in Delhi,” Lapang said.

UDP candidate from Shillong West, Paul Lyngdoh, is listening to soft and classical music in order to relax after months of hectic campaigning.

The UDP working president also said that he was busy trying to analyze the voting trend in his constituency.

“We are taking a detailed analysis on the voting trend in each and every polling station,” Lyngdoh said.

On the other hand, UDP candidate from Shillong East, Bindo M Lanong, said that he is currently assessing and discussing the votes polled and he is quite sure he will win the election by a margin of at least 2000 votes.

“I never had any tension and I trust my people and have confidence in them,” he said.

KHNAM candidate from Shillong North, Adelbert Nongrum, said that he has been meeting his well wishers and people who visit his home to wish him luck for the result which will be announced on Thursday.

“I am quite sure that a miracle will take place this time,” he said.

BJP candidate from Nongthymmai, Ehkupar Nongrum, is also busy meeting his supporters and party senior officials and assessing the number of votes the party might secure.

“We are surely winning in Nongthymmai constituency,” he said, confidently.

MDP candidate Martle Mukhim informed that he has been busy analyzing and doing post mortem of the election with his supporters and taking stock of the voting trend in the various polling stations.

“We are engaged in repeated analysis and post mortem of the poll since we want to make sure that we secure cent per cent victory,” Mukhim, who is also the party supremo, said.

He also said that they were trying to diagnose the lapses, if any, in their campaign.

“Irrespective of the poll outcome, I would respect the people’s verdict since the will of the people is the will of God,” Mukhim said.

However, Congress candidate Prestone Tynsong had a different take on the post election scenario, saying that ‘a politician has no time to relax’.

“You know that the politician’s brain works 24 hours. I am meeting people in my house everyday as normal,” Tynsong said.

He also informed that he had already carried out a detailed analysis on the voting trend in the whole constituency.

“I hope that the result on the day of counting would be in my favour,” the Congress candidate said.

Deborah Marak, MPCC working president, who is still camping in Williamnagar, said that she was relaxing after a long and hectic campaign.

However, Deborah said that she is quite bored since the election fan-fare has come to an end.

“I still feel like going out for campaigning and visiting many places again. In fact, even after the election I have been visiting many places assessing the election process,” she said, while adding that she is prepared to face the big day on Thursday when the results will be announced.

Teilinia S Thangkhiew, sitting MDC of Mylliem constituency, said that even though the elections are over, she is yet to get rest as well wishers continue to visit her to extend their best wishes.

“I think, I will get relief only after the results are declared,” she said, adding that with the air favoring her side and with an impressive voters turn out of 82 per cent in Mylliem she is expecting a big win on February 28.

On the other hand, a PhD holder in Law and HSPDP candidate from Mawthadraishan, Fenela Lyngdoh Nonglait, who has returned home to Mawlai Mawiong after hectic election campaign in her constituency, said that she was relaxed at present but the tension will only be over once the results are announced on Thursday.

Nonglait expressed confidence that she would emerge victorious even though she admitted that the contest would be quite tough in her constituency.

Independent candidate from Pynthorumkhrah constituency, PT Sawkmie, expressed a sigh of relief after the end of the election campaign and said that he was anxiously waiting for February 28.

Sawkmie stated that though his mind was at rest, he was still moving around, meeting and visiting people and has remained pre-occupied with many works in his area.

Roshan Warjri, Congress candidate from Shillong North, stated that she was pre-occupied with works despite her ill-health.

“There are so many works to do and I am yet to get any rest. I am having a terrible cough and cold, but I am recovering and feel no pain as such as every day I get to greet people who come over to my place extending their warm wishes,” she said.
