Editor,

The 2013 elections showcased variable aspects from the fall of the UDP (in spite of the Party’s bold claims), the upgradation of HSPDP, the ability of the independent candidates to garner 14 seats and lastly the entry of a surrendered militant into the Meghalaya Assembly. Well this is the verdict of the people of the State. The one hope is for development and change though it is difficult to anticipate whether we are going uphill or downhill. As witnessed in the past there have been members in the Assembly who had never uttered a word; there were some who dozed off during session. But in the midst of these was the presence of a voice that was loud and clear. The recently concluded election saw the defeat and loss of that voice in Conrad Sangma. He had been the most dynamic and vibrant figure in the last assembly. He had made his presence felt in every session of the House presenting important issues that were important for the state and its people. His constructive contributions to the debates in the House were timely and relevant. A real firebrand! His absence and his well versed arguments will be missed by one and all. I only wish that Conrad Sangma had argued his own case well and weighed his ability and vigour as a politician before anything and anyone else. However, at this juncture, let us hope that the presence of Paul Lyngdoh, Ardent Basaiawmoit, Jemino Mawthoh and James Sangma in the opposition will keep the ruling Government on its toes. We need a constructive opposition for the good of the people and the State.

 Stable Government

Editor,

Now that the period of mud- slinging is over it is important that political parties who have not made it to the Government should come together and support the government’s initiative in its efforts to uplift and bring a relative change all round. However, we should not be overjoyed because time will tell who the real performers are, and whether this government under Dr Mukul Sangma’s leadership can deliver and resolve the vexed issues that have dogged the state for almost 40 years. Above all whether this new ministry can keep its promise to review the Lokayukta to ensure transparency and accountability as the UPA Chairperson had spoken to her party-men in the past remains to be seen.

Why undue importance to cricket?

Editor

I am a daily online reader of your esteemed paper which keeps me updated of what’s happening in Shillong. But what saddens me is that

most of the time your Sports section is filled with news of Cricket. I’m not saying Cricket is not important but, space should be given to other

world sports and local sports events also in order to expand your diversity. I found out that many national dailies hardly cover other sports other than cricket. On top of that Meghalaya being the state where football is more relevant than other sports activities and that it comes first as far as interest of the youth are concerned I think, it is time you try to widen your perception about the meaning of sports especially in Meghalaya where majority of the people are football lovers.

Yours etc.,

D Mawrie,
