SHILLONG: The Division Bench of the High Court of Meghalaya, in its first sitting on Monday, allowed the Union Government and Ministry of Forest and Environment (MOEF) to file its written affidavit within four weeks while allowing the interim order, which was passed earlier to stop demolition of the Tara Ghar, to continue.

The Division Bench comprising of Chief Justice T Meena Kumari and Justice TNK Singh, while hearing the PIL against the move of the Government to demolish the Tara Ghar, issued the order after hearing the arguments of the legal counsel representing the Union Government, R Debnath, who was also accompanied by Advocate General KS Kynjing.

The court also extended the interim order to continue on the plea made by the petitioner’s legal counsel VGK Kynta.

The next hearing on the matter is likely to be held after a month’s time, sources said on Monday. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed by Informed Conscious and Responsible Existence (ICARE) in December last year before the Gauhati High Court Division Bench challenging the move of the State Government for demolition of Tara Ghar bungalow to pave way for the construction of the proposed Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
