SHILLONG: A delegation of parliamentary secretaries from Assam met the Chief Minister on Thursday seeking cooperation from the State government to work in tandem to quell the unrest emerging out of rumour mongering in Garo Hills border with neighbouring Assam’s Mankachar region.
Soon after a meeting with the Chief Minister, Dr Mukul Sangma here on Thursday, Assam Parliamentary Secretary-Department of education, Rekibuddin Ahmed has termed ‘rumour mongering’ as the main reason responsible in deteriorating the law and order situation.
The meeting was called after the law and order situation in the interstate border deteriorated when a series of clashes had erupted in the Assam border, Mancachar and in Garo Hills recently making the district administration to call for indefinite curfews.
“The grim situation disrupting normalcy along the Meghalaya-Assam border is a matter of concern for both the states,” Ahmed said while urging the people from both sides of the boundary to abstain from it.
Meanwhile, MLA of Mancachar, Javed Islam has sought the cooperation from the State government and informed that a meeting will be held between the Assam Health Minister, Himanta Biswa Sharma and Meghalaya chief minister, Mukul Sangma on July 28 in Kolkata to discuss in detail the problem and arrive at a concrete solution.
Dwelling on the past history the neighbouring states shared, Islam said, “We have a glorious history of mutual understanding and sense of brotherhood which should be maintained and not taken for a toss by few rumour mongers with vested interests.”
It may be recalled that following the turmoil, the All Assam Minority Student’s Union (AAMSU) had called for an economic road blockade of Garo Hills which evoked reaction from the other end of the boundary with both the FKJGP and the KSU urging the State Government to immediately implement a fully effective mechanism to check the immigration of unwanted elements in the best interest of the State and the local indigenous inhabitants and not to give in to the whimsical demands of organisations like the AAMSU.
The organisations had also asked the government to take immediate steps to prevent these organisations from disrupting the state highways which are the lifeline of the citizens.
