TURA: The five districts of Garo Hills are bracing for four days of protests this week with two separate groups of organisations simultaneously calling for protest shutdowns over demands ranging from the Inner Line Permit to a Garoland state.

While the Garo Hills State Movement Committee (GHSMC) has called for a dawn-to-dusk all Garo Hills bandh on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Garo Students’ Union has announced four nights of road blockade, beginning Tuesday, as part of the statewide stir for implementation of ILP system to to regulate the entry of outsiders into the State.

.The 5am to 5 pm Garoland stir on September 10 and 11 coincides with the GSU-sponsored night blockade in the five districts of Garo Hills.

Two hours after the conclusion of the 5am to 5 pm Garoland stir by the GHSMC, the night blockade would begin at 7pm.

“After a threadbare discussion with our allies in Khasi and Jaintia Hills we have decided to call for a 10-hour road blockade for four nights beginning Tuesday,” said GSU President Tengsak G Momin while speaking to The Shillong Times on Saturday night.

The GSU president ruled out any connection with the Garoland stir which coincides with their protest blockade.

“The Garoland stir is being spearheaded by the GHSMC. We have nothing to do with that,” clarified the GSU leader.
