Woman, who accused DU principal of sexual harassment, dies

New Delhi: A former Delhi University chemistry laboratory assistant, who was admitted to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan (LNJP) hospital with 90 per cent burn injuries after she had tried to immolate herself in front of the Delhi Secretariat on September 30, died on Monday. The police said she had set herself on fire in protest against alleged sexual harassment by the principal of B R Ambedkar college where she had been working as a chemistry lab assistant. The police had recorded the victim’s statement a few days ago, they said. The matter had gone to the sexual harassment committee of the college which consists of a board of teachers. The police said they were keeping a close watch on the developments and an FIR would be filed soon after the college committee comes out with its decision on the issue. (UNI)

Gold bars worth Rs 9 crore in international market seized at airport

Chennai: In the first such haul Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Monday seized gold bisuits in six bars worth nine crore in international market, from the toilet of an Air India aircraft to Delhi. DRI sources at the airport said five people, who had smuggled the gold to India and were taking it to the national capital, have been arrested in this connection. The DRI team first nabbed three of the fie member gang Md jainul (31),Hussain (40) and Abdul Kabur Nazreen(38) as they came out of the international terminal after their baggage was cleared. On information provided by the three, they rushed to the domestic terminal from where the same aricraft was to fly to New Delhi and nabbed Md yusuf(30) andMd Yassin(32) who had hidden the gold bars packed in a parcel in the toilet of the aircraft clandestinely and seized the booty. On interrogation at the DRI office in the city, the gang revealed that they would smuggle the gold out from Dubai hiding it in the toilet of the aircraft and Yusuf and Yassin would then take it to New Delhi from Chennai. DRI officials are now investigating how the gold bars that were being hidden in the toilet of the aircraft, had been going unnoticed every time who were the others involved with the gang. The five have been travelling to Dubai and back to Chennai on tourist visa. Yusuf and Yassin would then pruchase tickets to New Delhi at Chennai airport, to continue their journey. (UNI)

Asaram’s ashram attacked in Rajasthan

Jaipur: Protesting against Asaram, against whom a fresh sexual assault case has been registered in Gujarat by two sisters, irate local residents on Monday ransacked his ashram in Kardhani area at Jhotwara here. Raising slogans against Asaram, who was arrested in August on charges of sexually assaulting a minor girl and has been in prison in Jodhpur since then, a mob of about 15 people attacked the ashram and pelted stones breaking furniture, window panes and other items, ACP Jhotwara Nasimulah Khan said. They also damaged vehicles, including a bus, two cars and some motorcycles, parked outside the ashram. As the police arrived to control the mob, most of them fled from the scene, the ACP said, adding the situation is under control now. Two sisters in Gujarat have registered complaints against Asaram and his son Narayan Sai accusing them of sexual assault, illegal confinement and other charges. The complaint against Sai has been registered at Jhangirpura police station in Surat, while the one against his father Asaram has been transferred to Ahmedabad as the alleged incident happened there. The incidents reportedly happened between 2001 and 2006. (PTI)

 Delhi Police official’s wife shot dead

New Delhi: A Delhi Police official’s wife was gunned down by unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants here Monday morning, said police suspecting a case of personal enmity. Anita, 40, was shot at on Najafgarh Road in west Delhi’s Bindapur area, around 7.15 a.m. The assailants then sped away. The victim, wife of Delhi Police head constable Ombir Singh, was immediately taken to hospital where she succumbed. According to the police, the victim was shot in her shoulder and she died due to excessive bleeding. Later, the body was shifted to Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital for post-mortem. Anita was working as a ward assistant in the Army’s R.R. Hospital. “Prima-facie, it seems to be a case of personal enmity. A case of murder has been registered and investigation is underway,” said an officer. (IANS)
