GNLA kidnaps GSU leader

TURA: A Garo Students’ Union (GSU) leader has reportedly been kidnapped by suspected GNLA militants over differences in coal auction in East Garo Hills district even as the district administration has cancelled the auction until the end of the parliamentary elections.

The GSU leader from Mendal in North Garo Hills, identified as one Dreambirth, was on a visit to his family home in Dobetkolgre locality of Williamnagar on Monday when he was reportedly whisked away by a group of unidentified men.

He remains untraceable. It is said that the kidnappers have placed a one crore ransom demand for his safe release.

Highly placed sources have told The Shillong Times that the disappearance of the student leader was connected to a recent coal auction order that has now been put on hold.

It is alleged that those who would have benefited from the coal auction included a section of GSU leaders and businessmen while the militant group GNLA had lose out. Speaking to The Shillong Times over phone from Williamnagar, deputy commissioner V K Mantri said that the student body has so far not filed any official complaint on a missing person even as he informed that Monday’s coal auction had been cancelled following objections by a group of businessmen from the town.

‘Missing’ pharmacist surfaces: Meanwhile, a pharmacist posted at Rongchugre primary health centre reportedly disappeared three days ago surfaced unharmed on Tuesday in West Garo Hills. According to sources, pharmacist Harul Rashid, an employee of Rongchugre health centre under Dadenggre in West Garo Hills went untraced during the end of last week. According to police sources, he reportedly surfaced at Rongram market during its weekly market on Tuesday.
