Family commits suicide in Anand

Anand: Four members of a family, including two young children, committed suicide by consuming pesticides on the outskirts of Ralaj village of Khambhat near here on Saturday. According to Khambhat police, the four members of the family, resident of Bhadran in Anand district, had gone to Ralaj village yesterday. They reached a temple on the outskirts of the village and after offering prayers consumed pesticides in an open field near the temple at around 1400 hrs. They died before the villagers could spot and rush them to a nearby hospital. The deceased have been identified as Arvind Gohil (45) his wife Nayana (35), son Mitul (10) and daughter Kamini (3). There was no suicide note was found from their possession. Police is making further investigation. (PTI)

Barmer to get purified drinking water for 10 paise per litre

Barmer: Rajsthan government will provide purified drinking water in 160 villages of Barmer district for 10 paise per litre from next year. Under the National Rural Drinking Water Mission, about 160 RO (reverse osmosis) plants would start providing purified water in 160 villages by March 2015, additional Executive Engineer B L Jatol said yesterday. RO plants are ready in 36 villages after a check of the soil and water quality, he said. The availability of groundwater is not only very scarce, but its taste is salty, hence RO plants are being installed, Jatol said. (PTI)

Girl set on fire over land dispute

Basti: A 19-year-old girl was allegedly set afire by some persons after pouring kerosene on her following a land dispute with her father in Kaptanganj, police said today. “There was some land dispute between two groups during which one group tried usurping it by felling trees yesterday,” they said. Sudama Shukla, claimant from the second group, was attacked by the rival group members when he reached the spot. The attackers set his daughter on fire when she tried to rescue him, police said. The girl was rescued by her mother, who admitted her to the district hospital. Doctors said the victim sustained 45 per cent burn injuries, but was out of danger. On the complaint of the victim’s father an FIR was registered against eight persons under section 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt) of the IPC. Police said that three accused Umesh Chandra Shukla, Suresh and Virendra have been arrested. The dispute was related to possession of land, Deputy Superintendent of Police Kalwari Singh said, adding that remaining accused would be arrested within 24 hours. (PTI)

Woman electrocuted while catching fish from pond

Howrah (WB): A middle-aged woman was electrocuted early on Sunday while catching fish from a pond in which a live electric wire had fallen during a storm at Bosepara in Howrah district. Rani Dhar (55) died instantly when she lay her hand on a dead fish floating in the pond in which a live electric wire had fallen from a high-voltage cable during a storm, police said. Locals have been advised not to touch the water of the pond till it is cleaned. (PTI)

Photo-studio owner held for spreading Naxal ideology

Raipur: A photo-studio owner has been arrested for allegedly propagating Maoist ideology in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh, police said on Sunday. Kulwardhan Prasad (29), who used to run Moeet photo studio near old bus stand in Bijapur town, was allegedly helping the rebels to circulate anti-government messages and pro-Maoist ideologies, a senior police official told PTI. Acting on a tip-off, a team of local police raided the shop of the accused yesterday afternoon and later nabbed him, he said. “A laptop was also recovered from his possession which has enough evidence against him,” he said. While reviewing the contents of the laptop, publicity material of outlawed CPI(Maoist) and Chetna Natya Mandal – a frontal outfit of Naxals – was found. The publicity stuff included audio-visual presentations, Naxal literature, song and dance featuring message of the ultras’ movement, he said. Preliminary investigations revealed that Kulwardhan was allegedly downloading the pro-Maoist content on mobile handsets of people in the region, thereby helping ultras to propagate anti-state messages, the official said. Further investigation may reveal more crucial information in this connection, the official said. The accused was booked under sections of Chhattisgarh Special Public Security Act-2005, he said, adding that the accused was produced in a local court of Bijapur which sent him to two-day police remand.
