Sonia agrees to meet Salseng, Lapang

SHILLONG: The dissident camp in the ruling Congress in Meghalaya has received a boost with Congress president agreeing to meet former Chief Minister Salseng Marak and MPCC chief DD Lapang.

Gandhi will meet the duo on Tuesday at the AICC office in Delhi at 11 am.

Informing this from Delhi, Marak on Monday said that Cabinet minister HDR Lyngdoh will accompany the duo.

The state leaders are expected to raise the brewing resentment of the legislators against Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and the worsening law and order situation in the State particularly in Garo Hills.

Marak said that issues pertaining to overall scenario of the state including the law and order situation, the scenario in the party and the legislature which is currently a divided house, will be raised in the meeting.

When pointed out that several disgruntled legislators are camping in Delhi, Marak said, “We don’t encourage legislators coming to Delhi from Shillong . Some MLAs are in Delhi and they have come on their own”.

Meanwhile, social welfare Minister and MPCC working president Deborah Marak, who is in Shillong, has chosen to distance herself from the present political situation in the State.

“As a Minister, I wanted to concentrate on my work and as a working president of the party, I have to remain neutral and will present a neutral report, if the AICC desires so,” she said on Monday.

It was the meeting of Lapang, along with cabinet ministers HDR Lyngdoh, Prestone Tynsong and Congress legislator Martin Danggo recently with the Congress president Sonia and vice president Rahu Gandhi in Delhi which strengthened the cause of the dissidents.

During the meeting, the state leaders had apprised the High Command about the state of affairs of the party and disgruntlement of the legislators over the style of functioning of the Chief Minister especially on the failure of the Government in containing law and order situation in Garo Hills.

The dissidents got further boost with the Congress leader SC Marak offering to help them to find a solution to their demand for a change of leadership.
