Three arrested for torturing house maid

Howrah (WB):  Three persons including two women were arrested at Howrah on Tuesday for allegedly torturing a girl working as a maid at their house, police said. The girl, hailing from Assam, was allegedly tortured by the three following an incident of theft at the house on Saturday last, police said. The police said the house owner allegedly tried to molest her also after which the girl tried to commit suicide by consuming poison. She was admitted to Howrah district hospital in a serious condition the following day. After she recovered a little she told the police about the incident and an FIR was lodged. The three were then arrested and are being interrogated, the police added. (PTI)
Mizoram to share its power quota with Tripura during Pujas
Aizawl: Mizoram will share its quota of power received from the North Eastern grid to neighbouring Tripura during the coming Durga Puja, state power and electricity department officials on Tuesday said. The officials said Mizoram would give around 25 MW of its share of power to Tripura from September 28 midnight till October 7 midnight. In turn, the same amount of power would be shared by Tripura to Mizoram during Christmas, the officials said. The arrangement of sharing power quota by the two neighbouring states have been in place for a few years. (PTI)

YMA members to be given training on disaster management

Aizawl: Mizoram Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Minister C. Ngunlianchunga on Tuesday said that members of the Young Mizo Association (YMA) in each village and locality would be imparted training on the issue. Attending the passing out parade function of the 11th batch of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) at the headquarters of the fifth battalion of the India Reserve Police near Aizawl, Ngunlianchunga said that YMA members were the main disaster response volunteers before the formation of SDRF. “The YMA members were the first response force whenever disaster struck in a village or in the urban area,” he said, adding that better and state-of-the-art rescue equipment would be provided for the SDRF and local YMA members. Policemen belonging to the state armed police and IR battalions were selected for the SDRF training and were continually trained by the personnel of the first battalion NDRF from Guwahati. (PTI)

Arunachal govt may form committee on Ádi villages

Itanagar: The Arunachal Pradesh Government is contemplating constituting a committee to hear all concerned on exemption of some Adi inhabited villages from the proposed Lower Siang district, Chief Secretary Ramesh Negi said on Tuesday. “The state government is aware of the issue and contemplating constituting a committee to hear all concerned and suggest to the government for appropriate decision and if necessary, amendment to the District Re-organization (Amendment) Act, 2013 shall be made,” Negi said in a statement here. The statement was issued in the wake of 12-hour East Siang district bandh called by the Adi Students Union (AdiSU) on September 25 next to press the demand for exclusion of some Adi villages of East Siang from the Lower Siang district and settlement of boundary between the two districts. Further, Negi said, the state government considered that launching of any kind of agitation on the issue at this stage might not be in the interest of the people. (PTI)
