Kurung Kumey could be a model district: Arunachal Guv

Itanagar:Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt Gen (Retd) Nirbhay Sharma today said that remote Kurung Kumey district with its sparse population could be a model district of the state provided the leaders and district administration lead by setting examples.

“The biggest challenge of the district is that the centre of gravity of administration and public leaders is not in the district. If the people want development in the district, the epicentre has to be in the district,” the Governor said while addressing district heads and panchayat leaders in his day- long visit to Koloriang, the district headquarters.

“The leaders and government departments have to put in a concerted effort to explore ways to address the challenges,” Sharma said, according to a Raj Bhawan press release.

Pointing that the district has huge potential for horticultural and tourism activities, the Governor advised the people to harness it.

Acknowledging the infrastructural and communication deficits in the district, particularly road and air communication, health and education, Sharma emphasised on proper implementation of project, monitoring and utilisation of allocated fund.

“The local people have to be made stakeholders of the projects for making it a successful one,” he said.

At the same time, he said that strength of the tribal people is to think for the whole community and this spirit needs to be rejuvenated. Emphasising on providing basic amen-ities to the people in border areas, the governor suggested availing health and other facilities of armed forces stationed in remote areas by co-locating and pulling of resources together of the department.

He also advised for taking up education and health projects under Public Private Partnership mode.

Commenting on success of sports stars of the state in the recently concluded 28th National Level North East Sports championship at Itanagar, the Governor said that the youth has the potential to excel in any field provided they are given proper guidance.

State PHED Minister Takem Pario expressed gratitude to the Governor for his visit to share the pain and challenges of the people of the district.

He said the visit of the state’s head would provide impetus to the develop-mental process and stream-lining it.

Apprising the Governor of various challenges in the district particularly road connec-tivity Parliamentary Secret-ary Bamang Felix said that people of the district migr-ate to Itanagar and other places due to lack of road communication, health and education facilities. (PTI)
