State farmers urged to get soil tested to up production

International Year of the Soil observed

SHILLONG: Parliamentary Secretary, Agriculture Department, Celestine Lyngdoh has urged the farmers of the State to get the soil tested for better production.
Speaking during the celebration of International Year of the Soil on December 5 at the Integrated Agriculture Training Centre (IATC), Upper Shillong, Lyngdoh asked farmers to take advantage of schemes offered by the department.
He lauded the departmental officials for their contribution to approach the farming community, especially with the scientific approach of getting their soils tested.
He also said that continuous usage of conventional/inorganic fertilizers can damage the soils and therefore “it is essential to each and every farmer to get their soils tested and obtain specific recommendation”.
The main highlight of the programme was the distribution of soil health cards.
The programme was attended by more than 150 farmers from different C&RD Blocks of East Khasi Hills.
IAS, Retired Principal Secretary, Agriculture Department, P.Kharkongor wanted the departmental officers to create mass awareness about the importance of soil health for sustainable development.
