Moderate quake hits parts of U’khand    
A moderate earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Rich ter scale rocked parts of Uttarakhand in the wee     hours today. Epicentred in the India-Nepal border region, the earthquake occurred at 3.47 AM, the MeT department here said. As the tremors were moderate and occurred in the wee hours when people are usually asleep they were not felt by many, it said. However, a report from Chamoli said the quake shook people out of their sleep in the district. The tremors were also felt in Pithoragarh district which borders Nepal. (PTI)
Harassed girl’s tweet to railway ministry lands man in jail
Patna: A girl, who was harassed on a running train, tweeted to the railway ministry for help following which the accused was arrested, a railway police official said here on Saturday. The girl was travelling in Shramjeevi Express from New Delhi to Patna. “Finding her alone, the accused started misbehaving and passed objectionable comments,” the official said.  After the girl tweeted, the railway police was directed to help her immediately after which the accused was arrested and sent to jail for harassment, the official added.  Overwhelmed by the timely help, the girl thanked Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu and his ministry. Sangeet Som’s fans booked for attacking cinema in UP
Lucknow: A case has been registered in Uttar Pradesh against a group owing allegiance to BJP legislator Sangeet Som for threatening to burn down a cinema hall screening Shah Rukh Khan-starrer ‘Dilwale’, the police said on Saturday. Ashok Tyagi, the manager of Deepak cinema hall in Meerut, complained to the police that members of ‘Sangeet Som Sena’ (SSS) vandalized the theatre on Friday soon after the first show began and beat up up some viewers.  They also threatened to set the cinema hall on fire if the film was not pulled down within the next 48 hours. The members of the group, who say they are fans of Som, are protesting against the screening of the film owing to a statement by Shah Rukh Khan that intolerance had gone up in the country in the past few months.  Sangeet Som, the BJP legislator from Sardhana in Uttar Pradesh, had been booked by the UP police after the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots for allegedly inciting violence.  The police has since beefed up security at the cinema hall.  There have been protests in Allahabad, Lucknow and Gorakhpur by Shiv Sena workers and some other affiliates of the party. Fight over crab turns fatal in Goa
Panaji: A squabble over a freshly-trapped crab resulted in the death of a middle-aged man at Goa’s Dongri, around 10 km from here. Agacaim Police late on Friday charged 32-year-old Sanjay Haldankar under section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the IPCafter the fatal squabble with Sudesh Mayekar, both of whom were fishing for crabs at a sluice-gate in Dongri, which is popular amongst locals for crab fishing. Police said the squabble started late on Friday at the sluice-gate after Sanjay claimed that he had fished out the crab in question, while Sudesh insisted the catch was his. “A fight ensued and the accused pushed the victim who fell and received head injuries. He later died at the Goa Medical College while undergoing treatment,” a police spokesperson said. (IANS)
Mob beats tractor driver, helper to death in Bihar
Patna: A tractor driver and his helper were beaten to death after they crushed a minor in Bihar’s Gaya district, police said on Saturday. The minor died on the accident spot in Gaya’s Rangbahadur road, 100 km from here.  The two were beaten with bamboo sticks and bricks, police said. (IANS)
Chillies filled with drugs prevented from entering jail
Mathura: A consignment of narcotics stuffed inside thick green chillies was prevented from being smuggled into Mathura Jail by alert police officials. The accused — Shanker, brother of one of the inmates, was caught red-handed while trying to smuggle Charas and Ganja into the jail by mixing the stuffed green chillies in the spice sack that was being taken inside the jail, District Magistrate (Mathura) Rajesh Kumar said today. According to police, 150 gms of Charas and 400 gms of Ganja were recovered from Shanker. He has been arrested and booked under relevant sections of the IPC. Following the incident, a surprise check was carried out at the jail by a team of officers on Friday but nothing was found, the DM said. (PTI)
Woman shot at over resisting gangrape attempt
Muzaffarnagar: A 30-year-old married woman was allegedly shot at for resisting a gangrape attempt by three persons at Mubarakpur village in Shamli district. According to the complaint, three persons including one Naeem shot at the victim yesterday, after she resisted their attempt to rape her in Mubarakpur village, SHO VP Singh said. A case has been registered against the trio following the complaint by the victim’s mother-in-law, he said. The police further stated that the incident occured when the victim had gone to the fields to relieve herself. The condition of the woman is stated to be critical, Singh said. No arrests have been made so far, he added. In another incident, body of a 40-year-old woman was found in Yamuna Canal in Shamli district last evening. The deceased has not been identified, police said, adding that the body has been sent for postmortem. (PTI)
