NEW DELHI: Blaming Assam rebel groups like the ULFA and NDFB for the recent spurt in militant activities in Garo Hills, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on Monday sought the immediate redeployment of six companies of paramilitary forces in the region to quell the disturbance.
Sangma, who called on Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh in the national capital on Monday, pointed out that the six companies of central forces were withdrawn from Garo Hills during the unrest in Assam last year.
He added that the State has been constantly demanding the deployment of additional 18 companies of central paramilitary forces to deal with the sensitive region.
The Union Home Minister, meanwhile, assured Meghalaya that the Centre will provide all assistance to it to tackle terrorism, official sources said.
The Centre is considering Meghalaya’s appeal for more central paramilitary forces, Singh told the Meghalaya Chief Minister.
During the 20-minute meeting, Sangma also briefed the Home Minister on the steps taken to tackle insurgency in Meghalaya, particularly in Garo Hills, official sources added.
The recent kidnapping and subsequent killing of an officer of the Intelligence Bureau and another person in Meghalaya also figured during the meeting.
During the discussion, Singh also urged the state to make effective use of the paramilitary forces which are already stationed in Meghalaya.
“The Ministry will take all steps to arrange more forces for the troubled state,” Singh assured.
The CM said that the state is carrying out ops to contain militancy in GH.
