CM says ‘no’ to NPP plea on Tura bypoll

SHILLONG: While rejecting the appeal of NPP asking the political parties not to field candidates in the bypoll for Tura Lok Sabha seat , Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said that he was not keen to contest the post and that the name of the candidate will be decided by the party.
“It is too early to comment on the by poll, but I have no intention to contest as my task is to look after the affairs in the state,” Sangma told reporters on Tuesday when asked about whether he was interested in contesting.
Commenting on the appeal of NPP, the Chief Minister said that NPP had not shown the same gesture during the by election to Chokpot  Assembly, but went ahead in putting up a candidate.
Nominated MDC
In the wake of  Cabinet recommending the name of Selma D Shira to GHADC, the Chief Minister said that the state government can recommend the name of the nominated member as per  paragraph 2 (1) of the Sixth Schedule to  the constitution which mentions that persons less than  four in numbers can be nominated by the Governor to the Council.
The Chief Minister said that the Article 163 of the Constitution makes provision for the Governor to seek the advice of the cabinet in this regard
HNLC issue
With the HNLC fixing a deadline of one month to initiate talks, the Chief Minister said that the militant outfit should not set any deadline and conditions.
The HNLC in statement issued to the media said that the outfit will stop calling bandhs on days of national importance  provided that  the government appoints negotiators within a month.
