TURA: One of the four persons who were kidnapped by suspected ASAK militants a week ago has been released unharmed late on Friday night.
Truck driver Lillip Ch Momin returned home at Balsrigittim in Williamnagar on Saturday. His family denied paying ransom.
Momin said the armed men left him on a deserted road late on Friday night and he hitched a ride to Baghmara and from there he went to his village. The remaining three men — bus driver Pappu Das, a cloth merchant and
coal truck driver Anup Hazrat of Mankachar — are still in captivity. All of them were abducted on January 22.
Members of the Garo Hills Motor Workers Union, who met Momin in Williamnagar on Sunday, appealed to the kidnappers to release others. The union will also organise a peace rally along with other local organisations to appeal for the release of the hostages and better law and order in Garo Hills. Fear of abduction for ransom has forced all the commercial drivers to display black flags and cease work until the remaining three victims are released.
Rally against abduction
As a mark of protest against the abduction of four persons in South Garo Hills, several NGOs from the district have announced a protest march in Baghmara on January 31. GSU southern zone president Chuba R. Marak said the rally will begin from 11 am and urged locals to participate.
