SHILLONG: The construction of the new Meghalaya Legislative Assembly may begin this year if the plan of Assembly Speaker A.T Mondal materialises.
As many as 11 consultants have been shortlisted by an Assembly panel and they will make their presentations for four days beginning from March 21.
Mondal said no more extension will be given for the consultants to make presentations and one will be selected for preparing the structural design.
He said the chief minister had assured him that funds will be provided by the state government to construct the Assembly.
“We want to lay the foundation stone for the new building at Mawdiandiang after we get the structural design following which construction will begin,” Mondal added.
After the heritage Assembly was gutted in fire on January 9, 2001, there was undue delay in constructing the new building.
Earlier, the Assembly functioned temporarily from State Central Library and currently the business is transacted in the Arts and Culture building at Rilbong.
