SHILLONG: North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) has informed that it is making every effort to correct the deficiencies for the recognition of the post-graduate courses which have been derecognised by the Medical Council of India.
In response to a news report in this regard, NEIGRIHMS in a statement issued here on Thursday said two seats each of the post-graduate courses in the departments of Radio Diagnosis and General Surgery and two increased seats in the department of Anaesthesia are permitted seats granted by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
According to NEIGRIHMS, the first inspection was conducted by the Medical Council of India (MCI) during the final university examinations and MCI had asked not to recognise the course due to certain deficiencies.
“The institute is making every effort to address the deficiencies following which the matter will be taken up for recognition with MCI as per procedures,” the statement said.
Denying that NEIGRIHMS is collapsing, the statement said the inspection of regulatory bodies is a routine task and part of the process that every institution has to undergo.
“Any deficiencies pointed out during such inspections, which can be addressed, are normally addressed by the institutions within the time frame provided,” it added.
New initiatives
NEIGRIHMS further said the institute is working towards increasing manpower by taking in more faculty, para- medicals and supporting staff. It is also initiating infrastructure development, like construction of a medical college building for 100 students with adequate hostel facilities, a 250-bed state-of-the-art Regional Cancer Center with all the latest equipment along with a patient guest house and expansion of the Nursing College for 100 students
with adequate hostel facilities, which has started in March 2017.
The positive side is OPD attendance and bed occupancy in the indoor area have increased manifold and there is also increasing demand for private ward rooms, NEIGRIHMS said.
The faculty strength and resident staff, including the nursing staff, at NEIGRIHMS have increased twofold in the last two years and the increasing number of courses in medical and nursing side is testimony to the fact, the statement said. It added that the institute is processing the advertisement for filling the vacant faculty and other posts, which will be completed in a time-bound manner.
