NONGSTOIN: Election fever caught the people of Nongstoin on Tuesday when public meetings by four candidates contesting in the upcoming polls from Nongstoin were held at Nongstoin market.
The meeting kicked off with the HSPDP party candidate Diosstarness Jyndiang along with the party leader of UDP Mosklandar Marngar.
Jyndiang said that he wants to bring a lot of development like construction of better roads in and around Nongstoin, safe drinking water, heath facilities.
He also assured his support to end corruption.
Jyndiang added that he wants to implement Article 371 (Special provisions for states) in Meghalaya so that any law from outside cannot be applied here.
He urged Nongstoin voters to think wisely and vote for the right candidate who can fulfill their aspirations as HSPDP and UDP will form the next government.
National People’s Party (NPP) which followed next was attended by party candidate Macmillan Byrsat, AL Syiem and Macmillan Kharbani general secretaries and other members.
Macmillan said that people of Nongstoin need a change and a person with a capacity to lead the people especially young minds with a better future is the need of the hour.
He also told the gathering that if they choose him, then he will work for them but even if they reject him, he will accept the reality.
The candidate also stressed on his main agenda which is preserving the customary laws and land tenure system, protecting Christian religion, frame laws which can empower the village Dorbar, giving jobs to jobless families, and to also support those who are under poverty line.
He also promised to make education, health, agriculture and sports policies.
The candidate assured to bring to an end conducting personal interviews for any DSC or MPSC exam since it has created unfair selection of candidates.
BJP candidate Arphul Kharbani was accompanied by Davis Kharsati and other party leaders.
Kharbani said that BJP will get majority in the upcoming polls and also claimed that the BJP has spread its wings in different corners of West Khasi Hills as people have begun to think for the development of the state.
He added that BJP will eradicate corruption in the constituency, and also alleged that the local MLA D Jyndiang misused CGI sheets as the beneficiaries who have the right to receive those sheets were denied.
According to Macmillan, the CGI sheets were distributed to HSPDP men who are having RCC buildings.
Taking the stage last was Congress leaders and their candidate Gabriel Wahlang, adviser of the NBCC Nestingdar Nongdkhar, president of the district Congress Committee B Nonglang and other party workers.
Nonglang said that the Congress is looking at winnability of the candidate and he hoped that this year, the Congress will win not only in Nongstoin but in Rambrai and Mawshynrut constituencies.
The Congress candidate said that he will bring changes in the constituency if he is elected. Good roads, better infrastructure, good quality education, employment, agriculture are some of his priorities.
He refuted allegations made by some political leaders against the party.
The misinformation campaign spread by other parties is that the Congress government has banned coal mining, sand, stone and lime stone mining.
This propaganda is to tarnish the image of the party, he said.
