SHILLONG: The city, which had thin security presence in the past due to the improved law and order, will now have heavy security blanket following the recent clashes between protesters and police.
The forces are unlikely to be withdrawn from the vulnerable areas of the city.
As many as 15 companies of central armed paramilitary forces are posted in parts of the city. Six companies of SF-10 and five companies of CRPF from Garo Hills are also stationed.
In addition, two Meghalaya police battalions have been deployed to maintain law and order duty.
DGP S B Singh said the forces will be stationed for some time and their deployment will be reviewed depending on the situation.
“Peace is returning thanks to the efforts of the headmen, police, the army and the support from all sections of people,” the DGP said.
He said some of the injured police personnel are back to work.
Police had to arrest many rioters who had confronted the police.
The DGP said cyber security will be strengthened to prevent misuse of social networking sites.
No change in curfew timing
There will not be any change in the curfew timing on Saturday.
The East Khasi Hills deputy commissioner PS Dkhar said the curfew timing remains the same as on Friday.
Curfew was relaxed from 7 am to 4 pm on Friday in vulnerable areas while the curfew will be effective in the Shillong agglomeration from 8 pm to 5am.
