Communication skills programme organised by EJH college
SHILLONG: Realising the gap in public speaking skills and the need to develop fluency in communication skills for the students from the district, Jaintia Eastern College in collaboration with Avenues convened a one-day programme on ‘Communication Skills’ funded by Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), Government of Meghalaya recently. The main aim of the workshop was to improve language skills competency and also touching upon practical lessons on life skills for overall personal development. While encouraging students to build confidence and overcome personal barriers, the workshop incorporated various modules that helped students to conquer stage fright and public speaking. The programme brought together 150 students of the UG courses of the college which consists of Arts and Commerce stream.

Garo forum seeks redressal of expulsion of students
Shillong: The A’chik Indigenous Justice Initiative Forum (AIJIF) in a press statement on Wednesday sent a memorandum to the District Child Protection Officer, Resubelpara, North Garo Hills regarding the expulsion of three students from Depa Secondary School in North Garo Hills. The forum expressed concern that to exclude a child from school it needs certain procedures. On August 13, a meeting of the school staff was held in which it was decided that two girls from VIII standard and a girl from IX standard are to be expelled because of their bad conduct. The forum in the press statement added that this curtails the right of children to free and compulsory education. It urged the concerned authorities to look into the matter.

Central scheme for availability of generic medicines introduced
Shillong: The Director of Health Services (MI), Meghalaya, Shillong informed that the Central Government introduced a scheme for ensuring availability of generic medicines under the name ‘Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP). Under this scheme, generic medicines are made available to the public through retail outlets called PMBJP Kendras. Medicines that are stocked for sale in these Kendras have already been tested at the NABL accredited labs so as to ensure the quality prior to supply. Incentives of Rs. 2.5 lakhs is offered to operating agencies of both category (A) and (B) besides the State Government will provide free space for category A agencies. It also informed that the MoU needs to be signed between the State Government, the BPPI (Bureau of Pharma Public Sector Undertakings of India) and the agency of category A and the agency with BPPI for category B agencies.

IIM inaugurates Sino-Indian Executive PG course
Shillong: The seventh batch of IIM Shillong’s Executive MBA programme, PGPEx (Managing Business in India & China was inaugurated at IIM Shillong on Tuesday. The PGPEx-(MBIC) programme is the first ever Sino-Indian Executive Post Graduate Program and is conducted under the partnership and stewardship of two institutes of academic excellence – the Indian Institute of Management Shillong, India and the Ocean University of China, Qingdao, China. It is a 14-month intensive programme designed to equip participants with adequate knowledge and business skills for managing businesses in India and China, and also enabling them to operate at strategic levels with a global outlook by synergizing all functional areas of Management. The participants are also trained in Chinese language.

BSF organises Measles and Rubella vaccination camp
Shillong: Joining the campaign of immunisation against measles & rubella, Composite Hospital, Shillong organised the vaccination camp at BSF Campus, Umpling.  BSF authorities informed that the vaccination camp will be held every Wednesday at Composite Hospital, BSF, Umpling. On Wednesday, 52 children were vaccinated by Dr Anamika, Paediatrician of BSF under the guidance of Dr A C Bhardwajan, Medical Supdt. of BSF Hospital, Umpling.

ICFAI founder remembered with memorial lecture
TURA: In order to commemorate the founder of the ICFAI Group, Late N.J. Yasaswy, the ICFAI University, Tura Campus organised a special lecture under the theme ‘N J Yasaswy Memorial Lecture, 2018’ on its campus on Tuesday. Former Pro Vice Chancellor of NEHU and ICFAI Universities, Dr Milton S Sangma who was the chief guest on the occasion spoke about the difficulties faced in establishing educational institutions in the region. Basing his address on ‘Beginning and Expansion of Education in Garo Hills’, Sangma highlighted the history and development of education in Garo Hills and how they came into being.

Awareness on EVM, VVPAT concludes in Ampati
Ampati: A five-day awareness programme on EVM, VVPAT and Electoral Literacy Club (ELC) and Special Drive for enrolment, which was conducted by the Deputy Commissioner (Election), South West Garo Hills from Oct 3-9 concluded in Ampati on Tuesday. The workshop focused on the participation of future voters in the electoral process and the need to enroll them in electoral rolls. The programme was conducted separately for the Booth-level officers, ASHAs and Anganwadi workers of Ampati, Mahendraganj and Salmanpara Assembly constituencies, respectively. A talk on formation of ELCs, ethical voting, etc, demonstration on EVM-VVPAT and games were conducted for the participants. A district level workshop for nodal officers and nodal teachers was also held.

Transmission electron microscopy at NEIGRIHMS
Shillong: In a review meeting under the chairmanship of Director NEIGRIHMS, HOD pathology Prof Vandana Raphael said that NEIGRIHMS is the only Government health facility in North East for renal biopsies with facility for immunoflourescence. The department has developed transmission electron microscopy facility to further support the diagnosis in case of renal disorders. Besides it is catering to high end diagnostic services like fluorescent in- situ hybridization for leukemia and breast cancer, flow cytometry for immunophenotyping of leukemia which are either done free of cost or with very minimal charges.

Two injured in separate accidents
SHILLONG: Edmund Warjri (32) met with an accident at Mawlyndep Mawsawa around 3:21 am on Wednesday. As per the victim’s remarks, he was in an inebriated state when his car fell into a gorge. He somehow managed to escape and could not even recall the number of his car too. The victim sustained minor injuries and was shifted to Mawryngkneng PHC by 108 Mawryngkneng based ambulance. The car could not be traced at the moment. In another incident on the same day, Mahima Sangma(18) sustained injuries when she was hit by a grey coloured Zen car bearing registration number ML10 B 4181.The car fled away from the spot.Later the victim was shifted to Civil Hospital by 108 Lawmali based ambulance.

Ban on coal extraction
WILLIAMNAGAR: The East Garo Hills District Magistrate, L Ch Marak has promulgated Section 144 of the CrPC with immediate effect prohibiting the illegal extracting of coal from Rongrenggre Reserve Forests. The official release of the District Magistrate stated that there have been reports of coal deposits in the reserve forests being illegally extracted even by the people from outside. It also said that illegal coal mining attract a large number of floating population which brings other associated crimes in the coal belts.
