GSU demands inquiry into damaged schools in SGH
SHILLONG: The Garo Student’s Union Mindikgre Regional Unit in a press statement apprised the Director of School Education and Literacy, Govt of Meghalaya and the Sub-Divisional School Education Officer, Baghmara for the construction of new building under the damaged school buildings in Midikgre area, South Garo Hills. The union conducted an inquiry regarding the school buildings which date back to 1935 and it was found that no proper furniture or even a school building can be seen. It was said that some of the schools have given proposals to district authorities but to no avail. The union demand an enquiry and to seek detailed report of the schools so that students and teachers will not face any hardship and that the learning process will not be disturbed. request the concerned authorities. Meanwhile in a memorandum sent to the Chief Minister, they demand establishment of police out post at Mindikgre, completion ofAdditional NH-62 from Eringgre to Mindikgre, upgradation ofpublic sub-centre to primary health centre(PHC), upgradation of Balkal A.sim Govt. Deficit U. P. School to government secondary school, road connectivity and continuation of NH-62 Road from Mindikgre to Baromile via Chokpotand shifting of block office from Baghmara Municipal AREA TO Mindikgre or new creation at Mindikgre.

Synod College PG building inaugurated
Shillong: The Post Graduate Building of Synod College, Shillong was inaugurated on Thursday by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma in the presence of Home Minister, James P K Sangma, Commerce and Industries Minister, Sniawbhalang Dhar, Principal of the college, Dr. D Wanswett, teachers and students among others. During his brief address at the function, the Chief Minister spoke of his close association with the college through the years and lauded the efforts of the management towards uplifting the college to its present status. Speaking on the various aspects of the education sector, the Conrad said that the government is giving top priority to education and considering the numerous challenges in the sector, a joint effort of all stakeholders including the government, policy makers, social organizations, teachers and students is required to push it to new heights.

Pass percentage for teacher eligibility test should be reduced
TURA: Contractual LP school teachers from Garo Hills under the banner of the All Garo Hills Government Lower Primary Contractual School Teachers’ Association (AGHGLPCSTA) have sought the reduction of the pass percentage necessary to clear the Meghalaya Teacher Eligibility Test (MTET) examinations as fixed by the government earlier. The appeal by the teachers came after they were informed by Education Minister Lakhmen Rymbui, during their meeting recently that it was not possible to reduce the already fixed pass percentage of 60 marks necessary to clear MTET. The minister however informed them that the age limit for teachers has been raised from 35 to 40. According to the secretary of the association, Millingbirth D Sangma, the fixed percentage of 60 marks required to pass the examination was posing difficulties to the teachers who are already in their jobs due to time constraints as well as other reasons.

Capacity building programme on legal rights of women
TURA: The Meghalaya State Commission for Women in association with the department of Justice conducted a two-day capacity building programme on Constitutional and Legal rights of Women for Self Help Group members of four blocks under South Garo Hills District at Bakdil Training Hall, Baghmara. South Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, H B Marak in his remarked said that the programme is basically meant to combat crime and violence against women and that it was high time womenfolk from all walks of life stood up for their rights. As a progressive society, eradicating women related crimes and violence is the duty of all members of the society, stated Marak. Chairperson Meghalaya State Commission for Women, Theilin Phanbuh said that the basic aim for organising such a programme is to educate women in rural areas about their rights and the measures to rectify the crime against women.

Ampati Civil Hospital gets sonography machine
Ampati: A high-definition ultra sound machine has been installed at Ampati Civil Hospital on Wednesday and has been made operational since Thursday. The installation of the machine in the hospital is expected to boost the health care delivery system in South West Garo Hills district as a whole. Prior to the installation of this facility, patients requiring ultra sound tests had to be referred to hospitals in Tura or elsewhere.

Mei-Ramew farmers’ market to be held
SHILLONG: Mei-Ramew Farmers’ Market which is one of the important activities that aims to promote and generate awareness on Indigenous Food Systems will be held on November 16 at NESFAS Office, Kerie Ville, Laitumkhrah from 10 am to 5pm. The market will showcase produce from shifting cultivation, wild edible plants, and kitchen garden produce brought by two partner communities from Ri-Bhoi and East Khasi Hills districts which will also be available for sale. There will also be a NESFAS Kitchen to showcase indigenous recipes specially created by the members of NESFAS tastes and flavors network and also the MLCU Nutrition Dept. The market will also have the Mid-Day Meal Supplementation Initiative and Mei-Ramew Weaves stalls.

Animal rights body formed in WKH
NONGSTOIN: The West Khasi Hills district administration on Thursday constituted the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), a body that will ensure implementation of the PCA Act 1960. Deputy Commissioner T Lyngwa will be the chairman. District police chief GD Kharwanlang will be the statutory member and Dr W Hujon, District AH & Vety Officer, the secretary, among others.

Awareness programme on human rights
SHILLONG: A one-day awareness programme on Human Rights organised by the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) was held on Thursday at Mawsynram Border Area College, Mawsynram. Dr. Justice Aftab Hussain Saikia, Chairperson Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) was the Chief Guest. Speaking on the occasion, Saikia said the objective of organising the programme was to educate people especially the students about their fundamental duties and rights as enshrined in our Constitution. He also enlightened on the various rights and legal remedies which the public can resort to whenever their basic human rights are violated. The programme was followed by an interactive session whereby teachers and students posed questions on various topics relating to Human Rights.

65th All India Cooperative Week observed in Jowai
Jowai: The week-long celebration of the 65th All India Cooperative Week 2018 with the theme “Inclusive Growth and Good Governance through Cooperatives for Rural Prosperity” was on Thursday observed at Jowai District headquarter at  Lion Mission Compound Dorbar Hall. It was organised by the Office of the Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Meghalaya, Shillong and the Meghalaya Cooperative Apex Bank Ltd in collaboration with all the State Level Cooperative Federations. The topic for the day was “Cooperatives key for Organic Farming and Zero Budget Farming”. It was chaired by N.S Wahlang, Assistant Registrar of Cooperative Societies, West Jaintia Hills District, Jowai and attended by members of various cooperative societies operating in Jaintia Hills.

Children’s Day celebrated
JOWAI:/ Shillong: The Officers Club of West Jaintia Hills Jowai on Thursday celebrated Children’s day at Thomas Jones Synnod College with the theme, ‘Together we can’. The day was celebrated in a  special way targeting high school students  enlightening them with words of guidance and encouragement from various eminent personalities.  Wishing the students on this special day, Additional DC D. M Wallang, encouraged the students to have a clear purpose in life and to be optimistic always. In Shillong, the teachers and students of Little Blossom School, Oakland celebrated with a colourful cultural programme at Aurobindo Ashram Auditorium on Wednesday. Rakkam A. Sangma, MLA, RogaraSiju, South Garo Hills district was the chief guest. Meanwhile, Rilang Children’s Home in collaboration with the Pathfinders group, celebrated Children’s Day for the children of the Home. Bringing the awareness of the worth of children, the staff performed different activities to make the children happy and remind them about their rights on this day.
