SHILLONG: The People’s Democratic Front (PDF) has shot off a letter to the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, rejecting the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
The letter signed by the party president, Ivanlumlang Marbaniang, and general secretary, Auspicious Lyngdoh, expressed utmost disappointment and complete rejection of the bill.
The leaders maintained that they have formed the party to ensure safety and security of the rights of indigenous people of the state and unanimously decided to oppose the implementation of the bill.
According to the party, the CAB will shatter the very spirit of secularism provided under the Constitution and it threatens the unique identity of the tribal people and subsequently, ethnic clashes will disrupt peace and harmony in the state.
The PDF added that the bill will cause serious changes in the population dynamics of the state which will lead to regressive economic scenario.
The regional party predicted an unsustainable environment due to overexploitation of the state’s resources caused by population explosion.
