DGP forms fact-finding panel for coal probe

SHILLONG: The DGP, Meghalaya, has constituted a fact-finding committee where an ADGP rank officer along with three DIGs in the state have been entrusted the task of ascertaining the facts and circumstances regarding the various allegations of coal transportation and extraction here in the state.
The Meghalaya Police informed that 1,174 cases were registered against those involved in illegal transportation of coal and 109 cases were registered against those involved in illegal extraction of coal.
A statement issued by the police informed such cases have been registered till December 2018.
Further, the Police Department has refuted the allegation of the Ri Bhoi Youth Organisation (RBYO) that trucks pass through police check point unchecked.
The NGO on discerning several trucks parked along the bypass had lodged an FIR implicating that these trucks were involved in transportation of coal.
The statement said on receiving the information, a case was registered on the same day at Umiam police station and investigation to ascertain the facts and circumstances of the case ensued.
During the course of investigation, it was ascertained that the trucks against which the complaints were filed were in possession of relevant documents and were transporting clinkers, cement and back load goods.
Since, there is a no entry into Guwahati city starting from Jorabad from 7 am to 8.30 pm. Heavy vehicles transporting goods and commodities parked their vehicles along the by-pass awaiting permission to enter Assam.
As to the threats made by truck owners to the RBYO, he said the matter is under investigation and registered in Umiam Police Station.
On the allegations of passivity on the part of the OC is erroneous and misleading, as both the information received as cognizable cases and investigation have already been initiated.
It was also alleged that permission had to be obtained from the SP to register the case, is a misnomer, as it was only intimation to a senior officer and not seeking permission to register the case.
