KOHIMA/AIZAWL: Easter celebrations began with pomp and gaiety in the North East on Sunday with people taking part in candlelight processions and prayer services.
In Nagaland capital Kohima, thousands of devotees attended the sunrise service at the historic World War-II Cemetery to mark the resurrection of Christ from the dead.
Delivering his Easter message, the general secretary of Asia Pacific Baptist Federation, Rev. Vesekhoyi Tetseo, said, “Jesus Christ is the hope for those who acknowledge their shortcomings and repent.” He called upon the people to seek God’s mercy to attain “eternal salvation”.
Extending his greetings, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio said it was time to rejoice and be thankful for the gift of life, love and joy.
“The greatest act of love on #GoodFriday is followed by the greatest act of power on #EasterSunday – #Resurrection. The miracle of #Easter brings hope and it is a time to rejoice and be thankful for the gift of life, love and joy. Have a blessed Easter Sunday. #EasterWeekend2019,” he tweeted.
Nagaland Governor P B Acharya encouraged people to work for peace, harmony and brotherhood. “The resurrection of Christ signifies that truth triumphs over evil and love is always stronger than hatred,” the governor said.
Similar celebrations were also held in Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, where people woke up to musical bands playing ‘He’s Arisen’ to mark the beginning of Easter Sunday. Devotees across the state were seen exchanging greetings and goodies to mark the occasion. Presbyterian Church priest Rev. B S Thanga said arrangements have been made for special prayer services in Aizawl as well as other parts of Mizoram. (PTI)
