SHILLONG: The state government wants to complete construction of the new Assembly building before the stipulated time of 36 months.
PWD (Building) Minister Comingone Ymbon told reporters on Monday that the ground work for construction of the new Assembly building at Mawdiangdiang has already started.
“The government wants to push for completion of the project before the stipulated time of 36 months. We have told the firm that there should not be any kind of delay in the implementation of this important project,” he said.
The High Powered Committee in February last had allotted the work for construction of the new Assembly building to the UP-based public sector understanding, Rajkiya Nirman Nigam Ltd. The new Assembly building would be constructed at a cost of Rs 127 crore.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma had earlier informed that the fund required for the project would be mopped up from different agencies besides state and central resources.
The 125-year-old structure that housed the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly was reduced to ashes in a devastating fire in 2001 and since then the state hasn’t had a permanent Assembly building.
