BSF School holds workshop on career counseling, Yoga
SHILLONG: BSF Senior Secondary School organised a career counselling and stress management programme for students of classes X, XI and XII on Friday, a release issued here said. The programme was organised by city-based Hundredfold Academy in collaboration with BSF Wives Welfare Association. Stress buster activities were conducted and the students were provided with information about different career options and the proper procedure to follow them. Sunny Mawlong from Hundredfold Academy and Abha Sharma, Principal of the school, interacted with the students during the workshop. A seminar-cum-demonstration on Yoga and personal intimate hygiene was also organised by the Art of Living. Yoga expert Swati Bhattarcharjee spoke to the students on the importance and positive effects of Yoga.

NDRF to hold community awareness prog in EGH
TURA: The District Disaster Management Authority of East Garo Hills, in collaboration with the 1st Battalion of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Guwahati, is organising community awareness programme on basic life supports, first aid, search and rescue, evacuation, fire demonstration, etc., from May 13-18. According to an official communiqué issued in this regard, the awareness programme will be organised in Williamnagar at Mt. Penuel Secondary School and Ferrando Memorial Secondary School for the teachers, students and staff and the main market place for the merchants, traders, hawkers, etc. The programme will also be organised in all the C&RD Block headquarters like Rongjeng, Samanda and Songsak.

USTM celebrates Rabindra Jayanti
SHILLONG: The 158th birth anniversary of Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore was celebrated at the University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya on Thursday, a release issued here said. The function was organised by the University’s cultural forum. Rabindra Sangeet singer Moushumi Sikhdar was the chief guest on the occasion. Speaking during the event, Vice Chancellor PK Goswami said that there is much relevance of Rabindranath’s ideology and thinking in the present day since he thought much ahead of his time. He asked the students to explore the multifaceted Nobel laureate who has contribution in almost all spheres of knowledge. The programme was enriched with performance of Rabindra Sangeet and poems by students of the University.

NEHU professor bags Lifetime Achievement award in Science
SHILLONG: Prof. Sudip Dey, Head, Sophisticated Analytical Instrument Facility (SAIF), NEHU, has been recently selected for the Lifetime Achievement Award 2019 in Science (major area of study: Zoology) by VIFA, Chennai. Prof. Dey was selected for the award based on the report of the expert committee and recommendation of the apex committee of the 5th Venus International faculty awards 2019. The award recognises extraordinary teachers who have demonstrated excellence in engaging their students in ‘inspiring, innovative, and path breaking’ ways to ignite their potential. Prof. Dey has guided 17 students for their PhD in different research topics including application of ultra structural studies of animal hairs and bird egg shell in wildlife forensic science and conservation of wildlife; ultra structural basis of gravity receptors and UV reflecting scales in increasing silk output; Investigating Bio-Capacitors and their noble applications; Environmental pollution; Biological Liquid crystal, etc.

Timber seized by student volunteers in SWGH
TURA: Members of a student organisation in South West Garo Hills district, the All A’chik Youth Federation (AAYF), have seized a truck load of timber that was being smuggled to Assam without any documents on Thursday night. The Betasing AAYF members intercepted a truck (ML08 C 8842) carrying approximately thirty logs of timber logs on the Betasing PWD road at around 10:30 pm. On being checked it was found that the occupants did not have any transit pass or other documents for the consignment. The vehicle with the timber was handed over to the range forest office of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council.

BSF organises voluntary blood donation camp
SHILLONG: The Border Security Force (BSF) which celebrating its 37th Raising Day on Friday, organised a voluntary blood donation camp. A team of doctors and technicians from the NEIGRIHMS blood bank conducted the camp where 35 units of blood were collected from donors. BSF Commandant HS Rawat participated in the camp and emphasised that everybody should contribute to the noble cause and donate blood regularly, a release from the BSF said.
