GUWAHATI: Flood situation in Assam continues to remain grim with 10 more deaths reported from various parts of the state during the last 24 hours taking the toll to 28 due to flood while two more persons have died due to landslide.
A communique issued by Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on Wednesday informed that over 57 lakh people have been affected in the current wave of flood in the state where 4,626 villages in 114 revenue circles of 29 districts of Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Sonitpur, Darrang, Udalguri, Baksa, Barpeta, Nalbari, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Kamrup, Kamrup (M), Morigaon, Nagaon, Hojai, Golaghat, Majuli, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Cachar, Karbi Anglong and Karimganj have been affected.
Presently, 427 numbers of Relief Camps are operational in Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Sonitpur, Darrang, Baksa, Nalbari, Barpeta, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Kamrup, Morigaon, Nagaon, Karbi Anglong, Golaghat, Majuli, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Cachar and Karimganj districts with 1,51,947 inmates and 392 Relief Distribution Centres in the districts of Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Sonitpur, Darrang, Udalguri, Baksa, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Dhubri, South Salmara, Kamrup, Kamrup (M), Morigaon, Nagaon, Hojai, Golaghat, Majuli, Dibrugarh and Cachar.
Ten persons have lost their lives due to flood in the districts of Sonitpur (2), Udalguri (2), Kamrup (M) (1), Morigaon (4) and Nagaon (1) in last 24 hours. The deaths reported so far is 28 persons in Flood and two persons in landslide.
Water level of rivers at danger level: Brahmaputra at Neamatighat (Jorhat), Tezpur (Sonitpur), Guwahati (Kamrup), Goalpara, Dhubri; Dhansiri (S) at Numaligarh (Golaghat); Jia Bharali at N.T. Raod crossing (Sonitpur); Kopili at Kampur and Dharamtul (Nagaon), Puthimari at N.H.Road crossing (Kamrup); Beki at Road Bridge (Barpeta); Katakhal at Matizuri (Hailakandi); Kushiyara at Karimganj.
The NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) and SDRF (State Disaster Response Force) teams have been pressed into service in the flood affected areas for search and rescue operation.
Sonowal takes stock of flood situation in Barak Valley: Meanwhile,Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Wednesday took stock of flood situation in Barak valley and assured all government support for the relief, rescue and reconstruction works in the affected areas.
Sonowal first visited flood affected Karimganj district and asked the district administration to prepare a detailed project report for geo-bag protection of the bank of river Longai which is creating havoc in the district.
It may be noted that the rivers namely Kushiyara, Longai, Shingla and Barak created havoc in Barak Valley for the last few days. Flood in Karimganj district have submerged major parts of the revenue circles in Patharkandi, Nilambazar and Karimganj Sadar.
Chairing a flood review meeting to assess the intensity of flood that affected the people of the district in the conference hall of DC office, Karimganj, Sonowal asked the functionaries associated with flood rescue and relief to submit detailed report highlighting the extent of damage caused by the flood for the government to take up reconstruction work at the earliest.
He also emphasised on scientific study of the course of the rivers Longai, Kushiyara, Shingla and Barak so that the damage perpetrated by the rivers could be minimised.
Sonowal also visited relief camps set up at Karimganj Government H.S. School and Nagendra Nath Tilokchand MV School and interacted with the inmates there. He also asked Food & Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department to provide adequate quantity of food items including baby food to the camp inmates.
Later, Sonowal also visited Malini Beel Relief Camp at Silchar in Cachar district and spent time with the inmates there. He took stock of the facilities being provided to the relief camp inmates especially for the children and mothers. He also visited embankment of Bethukondi and inspected the status of the embankment.
He also held a review meeting on the prevailing flood situation in the district with government officials at DC office conference hall. He directed to ensure adequate supply of food and arrange shelter for the affected people maintaining proper hygienic environment in the relief camps.
