Food Act enacted
Nongpoh: The Deputy Commissioner (Supply) Ri Bhoi informed that the National Food Security Act 2013 has been enacted to provide food and nutritional security to people, thereby ensuring access to adequate quantity of quality food at affordable prices. The percentage coverage is 75 per cent for rural and 50 per cent for urban areas under TPDS. Schemes under PHH is 5 kg per head @ Rs.3/kg, AAY is 35 kg per card @ Rs.3/kg and the head of the family should be a female who is 18 years and above.
Pregnant and lactating women and children aging 6 months to 14 years will get nutritious food from ICDS and MDM scheme. Any complaint may be reported to the DGRO or the contact number: 2505517 of 1967. Meanwhile, the DC also informed that all the F.I. cards falling under non-NFSA have been released through the Fair Price Shop dealers concerned. Headman of the Dorbar should make a wide publicity in their respective village.

Three-day symposium concludes
Shillong: A symposium organised by the Salesian Province of Shillong (INS) which started on Monday at Sacred Heart Theological College, Mawlai had ended successfully on Wednesday. It was organised in preparation for the centenary celebration of the coming of the first Salesians missionaries (SDB) in North East India in 1922. The theme for the event was ‘Living Don Bosco’s dream in Northeast India’. All the resource persons were given a topic each for their paper presentation. In general, all the speakers appreciated the early Salesian missionaries for their tremendous contributions to the church as well as the society in North East India.

Results of art competition
Shillong: The Zenith Jubelieth Club, Laban, has announced the results of the annual Krishnadas Paul Choudhury memorial art competition held on August 11. In Group A, the first prize has been won by Ishita Agarwala of Loreto Convent, the second prize by Mebanjop Jude Marbaniang of St Edmunds School and the third prize by Parikshit Debnath. In Group B, the first prize has been won by Abhinav Roy of Seven Set, the second prize by Biprojit Shill of All Saint’s and the third prize by Mugdha Deb of St Mary’s Montesorri. In Group C, the first prize has been won by Ananya Paul of Pine Mount School, the second prize by Prajukta Roy of Seven Set and the third prize by Rachit Bhattacharjee of Seven Set School. In Group D, the first prize has been won by Sanchita Nath of Laban Bengali Girl’s HS School, the second prize by Pradyan Choudhury of BK Bajoria and Arif Sheikh of May Fair School, and the third prize by Saptarshi Nag of Step by Step and Siddhi Dey of Laban Bengali Girl’s HS School. In Group E, the first prize has been won by Tengsrang G Momin of Elswer Sec School, the second prize by Ayushi Choudhury of Pine Mount School and the third prize by Prashantaa Sarmah Bordoloi of KV EAC, Upper Shillong. In Group F, the first prize has been won by Srujanee Dutta of Pine Mount School and Karishma Singh Bhorali of All Saint’s School, the second prize by Shriya Sunar of Laban Bengali Girl’s HS School and Titiksha Bhattacharjee of All Saint’s, and the third prize by Gaiti. The winners are requested to report to the club premises on September 14 at 5pm.

Legal action against littering
WILLIAMNAGAR: The Williamnagar Municipal Board (WMB) in collaboration with the district  administration and Swacch Bharat  Abhiyan conducted a mega cleaning drive along Dama stream in the heart of Williamnagar town under Jal Shakti Abhiyan on Tuesday. During the cleaning drive, WMB found rampant littering by residents living near the streams and the government employees occupying the government quarters. The GAD lands also cause health hazards and unhygienic atmosphere, stated the written statement issued by the WMB CEO, Aloysius Ch Marak. Based on the direction given by the National Green Tribunal, the WMB had issued notification prohibiting throwing of wastes and garbage into water bodies, burning and dumping of wastes and garbage on roads, drains, open spaces. They also directed the people of Williamnagar to clean the wastes and garbage thrown, dumped by them in the streams, drains, etc. within 5 days  and warned that legal action will be initiated for failing to comply with the direction.
