Silchar: “Media is the conscience keeper of the nation and the voice of the voiceless. The media is working relentlessly for the good of the society at large,” said Hrishikesh Goswami, media adviser to the Assam chief minister
Speaking at the state-level National Press Day at Banga Bhawan here on Saturday, Goswami said the pen is mightier than the sword and the power of words is immense and one must use it properly to put things in proper perspectives while filing report.
Delivering the keynote address ‘ Reporting – interpretation – a journey’, noted journalist, KG Suresh said journalists must rely on facts and must keep an ear to the ground to get things in proper perspectives.
“Factivism must be the solo mantra and not activism and journalists must go to ground zero to unravel the truth, ” said the senior journalist and former Director General of Indian Institute of Mass Communication.
Differentiating between a journalist and an activist, Suresh said the former focuses on all aspects while reporting whereas an activist focuses on a,particular aspect. Underscoring the need to delve deep while reporting, Suresh said news and views must not be mixed up and news must be based on hard facts and not on whims and fancies.
“The disturbing trend is giving interpretations in different ways leaving the hard facts behind, ” the senior Delhi based journalist said, adding that this must be shunned.
