30 held under ME Act in WGH
TURA: The Deputy Commissioner (Supply), West Garo Hills Tura has informed that the Excise Department conducted raids in West Garo Hills and arrested 30 persons including 7 unclaimed cases under Section 53 (1)(a) of the ME Act during the months of September and October, 2019. During the raids, a total of 37 cases were detected with seizure amounting to approximately 204.775 litres of IMFL, 178.6 litres of beer and 35 litres of ID liquor. In this regard 23 cases were disposed off and a fine amounting to Rs. 45,700 was realised, a release informed.

IIM to hold fest Nirvana
SHILLONG: The Indian Institute of Management Shillong (IIM-Shillong) will organise its first-ever cultural fest – Nirvana, a three-day extravaganza – between November 22 and 24. The first two days of the programme will see cultural battles between participants across nine different events. On the final day i.e. November 24, the institute will host a ‘ProShow’ which would feature a night of performances from popular bands of Shillong. Alongside Nirvana, the institute is also organising its coveted annual management fest – Khlurthma (war of stars) – between November 21 and 23, in which management students of Major B schools in the country will participate.

Training on GST at Resubelpara
TURA: The North Garo Hills District Administration in collaboration with the Meghalaya Administrative Training Institute, Shillong on Wednesday organised one-day training on Goods and Services Tax (GST) for the accounting officers and staff of various government departments and organisations of the district. In the one-day training held at the Resubelpara Circuit House, Inspectors of Tax deputed by the Commissioner of Taxes were the resource persons who sensitized the trainees on registration for GSTIN, deduction of Tax Deducted at Source (TDS), filing of returns and application of refunds.

Helpline to report child abuse
TURA: The Director of Social Welfare, Government of Meghalaya, through a notification, has informed about a toll free number for reporting against child abuse and sexual offenses. According to the notification, the 1098, CHILDLINE number, which is accessible from any phone service in India, is a National 24-hour free phone emergency outreach service for children in need of care and protection. ‘CHILDLINE’ is supported by the Union Ministry of Women & Child Development and links state governments, NGOs, allied systems and corporate sectors.

‘Discover NE’ from Nov 26
TURA: The North East Zone Cultural Centre, Dimapur in collaboration with the Department of Arts and Culture in Meghalaya will organise ‘Discover North East’ from November 26 to 28 at Dadenggre, Babadam and Rombagre in East Garo Hills. According to a release issued here, folk artists from Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Gujarat, Uttarakand and local folk troupes from the villages in Garo Hills will be performing during the three-day festival.

Drug abuse prevention
SHILLONG: A one-day programme on drug abuse prevention for officials and personnel of the police department was conducted by the Police Training School, Shillong in collaboration with the National Institute of Social Defence (NISD) on Wednesday. The programme which was organised under the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR) aimed to spread awareness on drug demand reduction and was inaugurated by the Superintendent of Police East Khasi Hills, CA Lyngwa who was present as the chief guest. Around thirty) trainees from various districts and units took part in the programme. Those who spoke during the programme included Neil Jaitly Khongwir, senior counselor of the Manbha Foundation, M Sarania, superintendent of custom, (Preventive) NER, Meghalaya, Sandy Syiem of SANKER and Vivek Syiem, principal of PTS.

Awareness on occupational safety
JOWAI: An awareness programme-cum-in-plant training on “Best practices in Occupational Safety Health” was organised by the Ministry of Labour & Employment (DGFASLI), Government of India through its Regional Labour Institute, Shillong at the Goldstone Cements Ltd. Campus, Musiang Lamare (old), East Jaintia Hills on Thursday. PL Nongbet, Inspector of Factories, who was the chief guest on the occasion, highlighted the importance of occupational safety and health (OSH) and its inter-linkage with production and productivity. Guest Speaker and trainer AV Jambhe, who is the Assistamt Director (Safety), of RLI, Shillong, highlighted the importance of Occupational Safety Health in industries. He presented a 3-hour-long Audio and Visual training session on safety. As many as 80 employees participated in the programme which included all department heads, sectional in-charges and operatives.

Assembly panel meets govt officials
TURA: A six-member Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Privileges Committee held a meeting with the government officers of East, South and North Garo Hills districts on “Official dealings between the Administration and Members of Parliament and State Legislatures” at Williamnagar Circuit House on Thursday morning. Highlighting the roles and functions of the committee, Saleng A Sangma, Chairman of the Assembly Privileges Committee, informed the government officials that such kind of a meeting is necessitated to sensitise and to fill the gap between the executive and legislative organs of the government.

Medical, mental health camps
SHILLONG: The Research Office of Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU), Shillong in collaboration with the Department of Psychology, Allied Health Sciences, and Bansara Eye Care Centre organised a two-day free medical-cum-mental health camps in Umsawmat village, Mawphlang Block on Monday last and in Mawbeh village, Pynursla Block on Wednesday. The initiatives are the closing activities of the project “Applying principles of community based participatory research (CBPR) in developing a community mental health program (CMHP) in Meghalaya, funded by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), New Delhi. Two medical doctors, one psychiatrist and five optometrists attended to the people who came for the free check-ups in the two camps. Students conducted blood pressure test, temperature, height and weight measurements, etc. The students from the department of Psychology also conducted a role play to generate awareness on mental health. As many as 63 people came for check-up in Umsawmat village on Monday while 186 people turned up on Wednesday.
