CM condoles Jaswant Gill’s death
SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Thursday condoled the death of Jaswant Singh Gill on Tuesday. In a letter to his son, the chief minster said that he had the privilege of meeting Gill when he visited the state to aid the rescue operations for the trapped miners in Ksan. He said the state was indebted to him for the service and expertise he had rendered. Gill is known for his act in saving 65 trapped miners at Raniganj, West Bengal in 1989.

Teachers’ body formed
SHILLONG: A new organisation called Federation of All School Teachers of Meghalaya (FASTOM) was constituted which comprises teachers of lower, primary and secondary and higher secondary. Addressing a press conference on Thursday, president of the organisation, Kenneth Shadap said they will approach the government in the name of the organisation. He said that the organisation will work towards eradicating poverty, illiteracy and backwardness.

It seeks the right to education for people and to strive for the welfare of students. The organisation has also said that it will urge the government to constitute an education commission, to check syllabuses and curriculum from time-to-time and provide in-service training to untrained teachers besides. It will also stress on protection of the environment as discussions on threats of climate change are voiced out globally.

Preparation for census begins
SHILLONG: A state-level Census Coordination Committee was convened by the Director of Census Operations, Meghalaya, Joram Beda, under the chairmanship of PS Thangkhiew, Chief Secretary at the Conference Room of Meghalaya Secretariat on Thursday. Bharati Chanda, Deputy Registrar General and commissioners and secretaries of various departments along with officers of the Directorate of Census Operations attended the meeting. Issues pertaining to the upcoming Census of India, 2021 were discussed with various stakeholders and valuable inputs and suggestions were received. The Census of India will commence with houselisting and housing operations (HLO) and the updating of National Population Register (NPR) in 2020. This shall be followed by population enumeration in 2021. The Census of India is one of the largest administrative exercises in the world and it is a source of accurate statistics for policy making for central and state government as well as public.

Observance of pension week
Shillong/ Tura: The Office of the Labour Commissioner, Meghalaya has informed that the Union Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India is observing “Pension Week” from November 30 to December 6. In Shillong, the formal launch of pension week cum registration under the Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan-dhan (PM-SYM), a pension scheme for unorganized workers; and NPS traders schemes will be held on November 30 at U Soso Tham auditorium at 11 am. Principal Secretary, Labour department, DP Wahlang will be the chief guest. In West Garo Hills, it will also be observed from November 30 to December 6. The application mode of the scheme is online so participants must be between the age of 18-40 years and must possess Aadhaar, EPIC, MGNREGA job card, school certificate along with valid bank passbook. The applications will be carried out by the Common Service Centres (CSC) of the adjoining areas. Mass enrollment will be organised from 11 am onwards at Tura Super Market, on November 30, at Tikrikilla Block on December 2, at Dadenggre Block on December 3, at Gambegre Block on December 4, at Selsella Block on December 5 and at Rongram Block on December 6.
