SHILLONG: A group of residents from East Jaintia Hills has sought Governor Tathagata Roy’s intervention in fast tracking approval to the Rymbai-Bataw-Borkhar-Sonapur Road by the DoNER ministry.
In a media statement, lawyer and human rights activist Kynjaimon Amse said after years of delay and after the intervention of the Meghalaya High Court, the proposal and DPR was sent to the ministry in April 2019. The North Eastern Council will fund the Rs 123-crore project.
Amse stated that they sent a letter to DoNER Minister Jitendra Singh urging him for speedy consideration of the proposed road project. A copy of the letter was sent to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and his deputy Prestone Tynsong, MP Vincent Pala and the secretary of DoNER, besides others for their intervention. “We met the governor and apprised him of the problems faced by the people because of the absence of a proper road. We have urged the governor to intervene… by taking up the matter with the DoNER Ministry. The governor listened to us with full patience and assured us that he would take appropriate action… A copy of the letter sent to the DoNER Ministry is also given to the governor,” Amse said.
On the other hand, Amse expressed dissatisfaction over the attitude of the state government towards this matter of public importance and also the local representatives who failed to take up the public’s difficulties.
“Recently when we met the Deputy CM he gave us full assurance that the project would be approved soon. However, till date the project is yet to be approved. This is simply because of the fact that our state leaders did not take up the matter actively with the DoNER ministry for speedy consideration. It is in the best interest of the state that Conrad Sangma and his deputy Prestone Tynsong takes up the matter seriously. We will have to go New Delhi if the government does not take up the matter with the Union Government,” he added.
