WGH DC prohibits public smoking, issues directive on sale of tobacco
TURA: West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh, in an order on Wednesday, has prohibited all persons from smoking in all the tourist sites of the district including private and public, and also made it mandatory for all tobacco-selling shops, whether permanent or temporary, to display a sign that reads “Sale of tobacco products to a person below the age of 18 years is a punishable offence” under Section 4 and Section 6 (a) of the Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products Act, 2003 (COTPA). The order comes into force with immediate effect and will apply to the entire jurisdiction of West Garo Hills.

Credit camp for women SHGs
TURA: A credit camp for providing loans for women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) was organised by the Meghalaya Co-Operative Apex Bank at Resubelpara town of North Garo Hills on Wednesday. A total of 58 loans, amounting to Rs 29,50,000, was sanctioned for SHGs working in tandem with the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) by the bank’s Mendipathar branch during the camp. Participating in the programme, the national resource person for MSRLS, Tilak Das, spoke about the importance of rural livelihood programmes and linkage between the banks and the SHGs. He pointed out that banks play a very crucial role in ensuring the financial success of the SHGs and appealed to various banks, particularly in the rural areas, to come forward and make an effort in ensuring SHGs are able to open bank accounts. Others who took part in the programme and addressed the gathering include the regional manager of MCAB bank, Deepak Singh and Jonathan Rymbai, project manager for financial inclusion in MSRLS, among others.

Training on legal services
SHILLONG: The Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority (MSLSA) conducted a training programme on ‘Early Access to Justice at Pre-Arrest, Arrest and Remand Stage’ for senior police officers and secretaries of district legal services authorities at Meghalaya Administrative Training Institute (old building), Additional Secretariat here on Wednesday. NA Khan, member secretary, MSLSA, spoke on the subject of the programme.

Body unclaimed
SHILLONG: One male body was found lying on footpath near Hotel Polo Towers on February 2 at 8 am. Accordingly, inquest and other legal formalities have been observed and the same was sent to SDM&HO Civil Hospital, Shillong, for autopsy. The body, after the post-mortem examination, has been kept in the Civil Hospital Morgue Room for claiming. The deceased has been identified as Justin Dkhar S/o Binod Saha, R/o Pynthorumkhrah. He is five-feet tall and has a fair complexion. He was found wearing grey t-shirt with black stripe on the chest and a black trouser. He has black-coloured short hair. He also has his both arms tattooed. All concerned, who can identify the deceased, are to immediately contact 0364-2224818 or 0364-2222214 for the body collection.
