AGARTALA: With the announcement of schedule for preparation of National Population Register (NPR) in the state, the Congress, while addressing a gathering in Manu of Dhalai district on Saturday, said that the NPR exercise is the beginning of implementation of Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and advised people not to show any documents.
Indian Youth Congress national president Srinivas BV, addressing Yuva Akrosh Rally in Manu, called on the people to save the Constitution from the onslaught of the Modi-led government and urged the citizen to unite against BJP’s divisive strategies of CAA, National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the NPR revision.
The Youth Congress president, Srinivas accused the BJP for unleashing terror on students at Jamia Millia Islamia University, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and other academic institutions across the country besides, a large number of areas with mixed population in the name of Hindus and Muslims.
“The BJP-led government at the Centre doesn’t respect the citizens of the country. Despite continuous protests and united agitations against CAA, they passed it using their brute majority, without considering the implications in the country. Now in the name of NPR, the government intends to start the preliminary exercise of implementing CAA,” Srinivas said.
He claimed that India was created as a sovereign, secular and democratic republic because of innumerable sacrifices of the Congress party and alleged, “Now BJP is persuading its community and using religion-based politics to destroy the country for their narrow interest, which people of the country would not allow any more”.
He claimed that no ‘Hindutva’ activist ever died during the freedom struggle against the Britishers, instead they were engaged in boot-licking the British colonialists and at present BJP and Rashtriya Sayamsevak Sangh (RSS) are desperate to prove themselves as great nationalists.
Calling upon the people to stand against BJP’s alleged divisive politics and vote for Congress in the upcoming Tripura ADC elections scheduled in May this year, Srinivas recalled the contribution of Congress party for the development of tribal people. Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had extended the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution to form the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council, and after her, Rajiv Gandhi signed an agreement with armed rebel group TNV to bring peace in the state.
Tripura Congress chief Pijush Kanti Biswas said, “Now, BJP and its ally are shedding crocodile tears in the name of tribal development in speeches and papers, but practically in the last two years, Biplab Kumar Deb-led government has done nothing remarkable for tribals except instigating communal sentiments and making tall promises of handsome packages. The tribals elected BJP and its ally in 90 per cent reserved seats in the last assembly elections but in return they received multiple sufferings”.
Criticising the present government, Biswas alleged that the BJP cheated innocent people of the state. (UNI)
