Campaign for Langrin by-poll ends

UDP confident of retaining seat

Mawkyrwat: The campaign to Langrin bypoll scheduled for Friday ended on Wednesday.
The bypoll was necessitated after the death of sitting MDC Nasar Marwein. The constituency will witness a triangular contest with UDP’s Pius Marwein, Jotin Khardewsaw (Congress), and Kitborlang Nongrem (NPP) remaining in the fray.
Recently, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma had campaigned for the party candidate.
UDP confident
General Secretary of the United Democratic Party (UDP) Central Body, Jemino Mawthoh on Wednesday expressed confident that the party will retain the seat from Langrin by winning the upcoming by-election.
Addressing the UDP workers during the election campaign at Rangthong village, Mawthoh said, “We are expecting that about 80% of the voters from Langrin Constituency will vote again for the UDP”. He also welcomed leaders and members of NPP who have joined the party.
However, Mawthoh urged upon the party workers not to underestimate the opponents during election, but instead should remain united, co-operate and work hard to keep on strengthening the party so that the candidate of the party, Pius Marwein who is also the Ranikor MLA can win.
Meanwhile, UDP leader Olansing Suin said, “This by-election is very important and we need to win in order to bring back the EC at KHADC to strengthen the existing laws to protect the Jaitbynriew.
DC issues directives
South West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, Isawanda Laloo on Wednesday issued a public order restricting all kinds of corrupt practices as well as holding public meetings during the period of 48 hours ending with the hour fixed for the close of the poll.
Laloo added, “On the polling day, political parties and candidates should strictly comply with the instructions given. Complete freedom to voters to exercise their franchise without being subjected to any annoyance or obstruction.
Refrain from serving or distributing liquor on polling day and during the 24-hours preceding it. They should also cooperate with the authorities in complying with the restrictions to be imposed on the plying of vehicles on the polling day and obtain permits for them which should be displayed prominently on those vehicles”.
The order will extend throughout Langrin and will come into force with immediate effect.
Section 144
With the Langrin MDC by-election scheduled to be held on February 28, the District Magistrate of South West Khasi Hills district has issued an order under Section 144 CrPC prohibiting any impediment/obstruction all along the PWD roads, border roads and internal roads by any company/ contractors/individuals with effect from February 26 to 28 or until election process is over.
It will extend throughout Langrin District Council Constituency and will come into force with immediate effect.
