ABVP asks NEHU to clear stand
SHILLONG: Concerned about the present education scenario in the state owing to the COVID-19-induced lockdown, a delegation of the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Meghalaya Unit, on Thursday, met the Pro Vice Chancellor of NEHU, Shillong, asking him to release a circular in order to clear the doubts of the students in the state. The ABVP asked the NEHU administration to clear its stand on the evaluation and conduct of examination amidst the pandemic. The Pro VC assured the delegation that NEHU would soon come out with a clear picture after the matter is discussed in the academic council and Executive Committee.

Episcopal ordination in Tura
SHILLONG: The Episcopal Ordination of Jose Chirackal, the Auxiliary Bishop of Tura will be held at Sacred Heart Shrine, Tura on Saturday at 10 am. Andrew R Marak, Bishop of Tura, will be the principal consecrator. Only guests and designated representatives from parishes and institutions have been invited in view of COVID-19 situation in the state. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and Tura MP Agatha Sangma besides other officials are expected to attend the function, which will also be available on YoutTube.

IIM e-symposium on horticulture
SHILLONG: With a bid to build on action research and implementation of sustainable development models by engaging with key stakeholders in the Horticulture industry, the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Centre for Policy Research & Analysis, IIM-Shillong, will organise an e-symposium on Horticulture (Opportunities in NER) under the e-Symposia Series on Emergent North East India: Strategic and Developmental Imperatives. Kailash Choudhary, Minister of State for Agriculture, Cooperation and Farmers Welfare, Govt. of India will be the chief guest for the e-symposium. Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang will present the valedictory address during the technical session on ‘Organizing Community for Horticulture’.

NEHU int’l conference under way
SHILLONG: A three-day long international conference on ‘Computational Performance Evaluation 2020 (ComPE 2020)’ went under way at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong, on Thursday. The conference is coordinated by Sudip Paul from NEHU and Jitendra Kumar Verma from Amity University, Gurugram. As many as 12 key note speakers and 170 participants will be sharing their research work in the conference.

SSA teachers seek revision of salary
SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan School Association, Central Body, on Thursday, asked the state government to enhance the salary of lower and upper primary SSA teachers. Maintaining that this move would motivate the teachers, the association said that salaries of the SSA teachers should be at par to that of the regular teachers i.e. basic plus dearness allowances in accordance with the Revised Pay Structure under the Meghalaya Services (Revision of Pay) Rules, 2018.

Advisory for Phulbari citizens
SHILLONG: After heavy rains lashed major parts of Garo Hills region, the Sub-Divisional Manager, Feedback Energy Distribution Company Ltd., Phulbari, has informed that electricity has been suspended in some areas under Phulbari Sub-Division due to the prevailing flood situation. He also informed that areas where red ribbons have been tied on wires are not safe for people to venture into.

Police on alert for drug trafficking
KHLIEHRIAT: East Jaintia Hills Police are on high alert to check the transport of contraband along the NH-6. Speaking to this correspondent, Deputy Superintendent of Police (HQ), GA L Marshillong, informed the recent bust of herion, the police, especially the Anti Narotic Task Force, are keeping vigil at various check points.  The East Jaintia Police, recently, detected drugs weighing 323 grams worth Rs 30 lakh in the street market. Two persons were arrested in this connection.

SP takes stock of border villages
KHLIEHRIAT: The East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police, Deepak Kumar Palecha along with a team of police personnel, visited the border villages along the International border with Bangladesh to take stock of the situation relating to criminal activities.  He visited Lahaleng and other villages while a short interaction meeting was also held with the village elders. Further, the team also met and interacted with BSF at Kuliang and Leijri BOPs and assured cooperation between the two forces.

NESFAS welcomes executive director
SHILLONG: The advisory board and staff of NESFAS welcomed Pius Ranee as the new Executive Director. With 8 years in NESFAS, and a lifetime with his community in Nongtraw village in East Khasi Hills, Ranee “is a perfect fit to be the Executive Director of NESFAS”, according to Phrang Roy, NESFAS Chairman.
