Birth anniv of Mukherjee
SHILLONG: The State BJP on Monday observed the birth anniversary of Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, the founder of Bharatiya Jana Sangh at state BJP office. State BJP president, Ernest Mawrie, lighted a lamp and paid floral tribute to Mukherjee. Speaking at the occasion, Mawrie highlighted the achievements of Mukherjee and the contributions in protest against Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir.
Rice, wheat quota for EKH
SHILLONG: The East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner (Supply) has informed that rice under NFSA (AAY and PHH) and non-NFSA for the month of July and wholemeal aata for the month of June have been released through respective fair price shops. “Distribution of rice under AAY is at the scale of 35 kg per card at Rs 3 per kg, PHH at the scale of 5 kg per head at Rs 3 per kg and non-NFSA at the scale of 7.215 kg per household at Rs 12.70 to Rs 13.00. Wholemeal aata will be distributed at the scale of 5 kg per card in urban areas and 3 kg per card in rural areas at Rs 8 per kg,” a statement said on Monday. Any non-supply, overcharging and supply of less prescribed scale or inferior quality can be reported to the office of the EKH DC (Supply).
Dist-level committee in WKH
NONGSTOIN: West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, who is the Chairman of District level Behavioral Change committee, on Monday said that as per government directives, the committee has to be set up at the district and sub-divisional level to see that awareness on behavioral change is needed right from the grassroots level, to be conscious and strictly follow the advisory and protocol issued by the Health Department in the fight against COVID-19. The DC said this during a meeting held along with the committee members which include the SP, SDO(C) Mairang and Mawsynrut, DSEO, DM&HO and DPRO in the office chamber of the West Khasi Hills DC.
Dalai Lama’s birthday celebration
SHILLONG: On the occasion of Dalai Lama’s 85th birthday on Monday, the Tibetan community distributed packed meals with sweets to the needy in and around Jhalupara area. Earlier, on behalf of the Central Tibetan Administration, Tibetan settlement officer Pema Dhondup, accompanied by the office secretary, paid visit to dignitaries and officials of the state and presented traditional white scarfs and mementoes to mark the auspicious occasion. The dignitaries and officials include Governor Tathagata Roy, chief secretary MS Rao, DGP R Chandranathan, Deputy Commissioner MW Nongbri and Superintendent of Police (City) Vivek Syiem.
Ban on river poisoning in Pynursla
SHILLONG: With the rising cases of large-scale poisoning of rivers, streams and other water bodies in Pynursla Civil Sub-Division, the Additional Deputy Commissioner, I/c Pynursla Civil Sub-Division, Pynursla, on Monday prohibited people from indulging in such activities, which pose a threat to the aquatic life in the sub-division. “The order is necessitated in view of the reports received that large-scale poisoning of rivers, streams and other water bodies is taking place within the sub-division and the use of chemical and biological substance on water bodies has resulted in large-scale extermination of fishes and other aquatic organism,” a statement said on Monday. The statement also said that use of toxins has not only affected the aquatic life, but also human beings. “The poisoning of water bodies has resulted in huge economic loss since the short-term gains of the few unscrupulous elements has upset the long-term well-being of the general public,” the statement added.
DC extends night curfew in SWKH
MAWKYRWAT: In view of the surge in COVID-19 cases across the state, South West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, Isawanda Laloo, on Monday extended night curfew in the district till July 13. The movement of individuals between 9pm to 5am, according to the order, will be prohibited while fines will be imposed on people moving in public places without wearing a mask. The DC also said that Mawkyrwat market, being the biggest public market with heavy rush, will continue to be regulated and weekly market system will remain suspended until further orders. The market timing, however, has been rescheduled from 9 am to 4:30 pm, the order said, adding “up to 2,105 market IDs/passes have been issued to headmen with a direction to rotate them”. Other restrictions and relaxations will be in place as per earlier notification.
Inquiry into high price of essentials
TURA: Alleging increase in prices of essential commodities at various markets and shops in the plains of West Garo Hills, the All Meghalaya Minorities Students’ Union (AMMSU) has urged the sub-divisional officer (Supply) of Dadenggre Civil Sub-Division to carry out an inquiry into the matter. In a complaint, the union president, Nur Islam SK, informed that essential commodities like rice, dal, sugar and LPG cylinders are being sold higher than the normal price from time to time. A copy of the complaint has also been forwarded to the West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner.
