Body found in Umpyrli river
NONGPOH: In an unusual incident, an unidentified body was found packed in a plastic bag in Umpyrli river, Lad Iewsier, Ri Bhoi. According to some youths, the body was initially discovered by fishermen, who then informed the village leaders. After being informed by the village authority, the police arrived at the location but were unable to retrieve the body due to fears over COVID and the cops were not equipped with PPE. After due arrangements, the body was finally taken out from the river. It has been brought to Nongpoh Civil Hospital and the identification will be done on Saturday. It was not clear if the body was of a man or woman at the time of filing of this report.

IIM e-symposium on handicraft
SHILLONG: The Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Centre for Policy Research & Analysis, under the aegis of IIM Shillong, on Friday hosted an e-symposium on handicraft sector under the ‘e-Symposia Series on Emergent North East India: Strategic and Developmental Imperatives’. Speaking as Chief Guest, Minister of Tribal Affairs, Arjun Munda, said, “I am happy to associate myself with this e-symposium which facilitates not only a better understanding of NER, but also the ground realities, and immense potentiality, further creating an ambiance for ideation towards increased and holistic betterment.” He further informed that his ministry was working in a focussed and coordinate manner with other ministries and stakeholders with the urgency to ensure how development aspects can be brought about.

Online quiz competition
SHILLONG: Patanjali Yog Samiti & Bharat Swabhiman Trust, Shillong, supported by Yuva Bharat, Shillong, will organise an online yoga quiz competition for the children below 15 years on Sunday at 11:00 am for 25 minutes. The competition will be organised in a bid to create awareness on yoga and to make children fight boredom amid the pandemic. “E-certificates will be provided to all the participants. Rectification of DC’s order in WGH
SHILLONG: The NGOs from Raksamgre Civil Sub-Division has appealed from the West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner a corrigendum on a recent order issued on imposing fines on violators, which, according to the NGOs, mentioned Tikrikilla as a civil sub-division. “Since there are only two civil sub-divisions under West Garo Hills District, viz. Dadenggre and Raksamgre, your notification mentioning Tikrikilla as civil sub-division is incorrect which needs to be corrected in the interest of justice and public service by way of issuing a corrigendum at the earliest possible time,” the NGOs said.

Teacher’s death condoled
SHILLONG: Retired principal of Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School, Uma Purkayastha, has condoled the death of a teacher of the school, Hironmoyee Bora, who passed away on July 15. “She was a very smart, active and lively teacher, and in addition to teaching, she was in-charge of Girls’ guide, Junior Red Cross, etc., of the school and was a very popular teacher cum counsellor. Doli Baidew, my most beloved ‘Dolidi’ is no more! I am personally missing her! I pay my best tribute to her departed soul. Om Shanti!,” a statement from the former principal said.
