Beijing: A Chinese woman wanted in human trafficking has surrendered after fleeing to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) eight years ago, police said on Sunday.

The woman, surnamed Wang, was among more than 9,000 fugitives who surrendered to or were arrested by Chinese police following a campaign to hunt them down. She was the first absconding suspect, nabbed in northeast Liaoning Province, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. Police said Wang was involved in a shell game of exporting labourers to the UAE, in which she profited tens of thousands of yuan in 2002. Wang said she used a false identity and lived a tough, vagabond life in the UAE.

“I dared not speak even when I was treated unfairly in business, and I often suffered nightmares and was very homesick,” Wang said. During the campaign, police made frequent visits to Wang’s close relatives and persuaded them to convince Wang to return home and face trial as soon as possible, because her surrender would increase her chances of a more lenient punishment.

As part of the campaign, Liaoning police also arrested a suspect named Song, a key figure involved in a car-theft case that involved more than 60 Hondas from 2006 and 2007. (PTI)

Woman microwaves kitten

London: A 30-year-old woman in Britain has been accused of microwaving her neighbour’s kitten after she was allegedly thrown out of a party, a media report said Saturday.

Gina Robins, 30, faces one charge of causing unnecessary suffering to the pet by putting it in the appliance at a house in Torquay, Devon, Feb 16, the Daily Mail reported.

It is claimed the short-haired kitten, which was only a few months old, suffered devastating injuries and died.

Robins pleaded not guilty when she appeared before magistrates and only spoke to confirm her name and address. The case is being brought forward by the animal charity RSPCA after the kitten’s owner made a formal complaint, the Mail said. (IANS)

Man holds up Brazil vice prez with toy gun

Brasilia: A man armed with a toy pistol tried to hold up Brazil Vice President Michel Temer in Sao Paulo city, the weekly Veja magazine reported.

The incident – that had not been revealed till July 9 – occurred July 1 and was confirmed by Temer’s office.

The weekly magazine said when the car carrying Temer came to a stop on a Sao Paulo street, a man approached the window and tapped on it.

Temer’s personal bodyguards from another car spotted that the man was hiding a handgun, and called out to him to stop and stay where he was.

The unidentified assailant managed to escape, but dropped the gun that turned out to be a toy.

Veja reported that once Temer saw there was no danger, he chose to continue on his way and let the robber escape. He didn’t inform the incident to the police.

Hold-ups at traffic lights have become common in Sao Paulo, Brazil’s largest city with a population of almost 18 million. (IANS)
