Assam, Tripura win foodgrain awards

New Delhi: Five states, including Assam and Tripura, on Saturday received awards from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for high production of foodgrains in 2010-11 crop year (July-June).

The other three states, which won the award are Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Orissa, an official statement said here.

Assam and Orissa got the award in the category of states with overall foodgrain production of between one and 10 million tonne.

Tripura was the sole winner in the category of states with overall foodgrain production of less than one million tonne.

Punjab and Uttar Pradesh were the joint winners of the “Krishi Karman award” in the category of states with overall foodgrain production of more than 10 million tonne recorded in the last five years.

The PM also rewarded some states in the individual crop category.

The award for rice went to Chhattisgarh while that of wheat went to Haryana, Maharashtra and Rajasthan won for pulses and Karnataka for coarse cereals.

Each award winning state received a trophy, a citation and cash award.

The cash award (for each State) was Rs 1 crore for total food grain production and Rs 1 crore for each of the four crops (rice, wheat, pulses, coarse cereals).

Chief Ministers of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Assam and Chhattisgarh were present at the award ceremony. (PTI)
