Guwahati: A CRPF jawan was killed and seven others including three CRPF men, few civilians were injured in a powerful grenade explosion at Paltan Bazar (near ASTC office) in the heart of Guwahati on Saturday night.
The incident occurred within a few metres from the Paltan Bazar police station and behind Southern boundary wall of the Guwahati railway station at around 7.40pm.
Police said unidentified miscreants hurled the grenade at a CRPF picket in the busy area. The needle of suspicion was pointed at the anti-talks faction of the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA).
Kamrup (Metro) Deputy Commissioner A Agnihotri said one of the CRPF jawans, who was injured in the explosion, died after being admitted to the GMC Hospital.
Meanwhile, in separate incident in Dhubri, three persons were injured when the police opened fire to control a mob on Friday following tension over theft in a Kali temple. An agency report said that one of three injured died later.
The authorities imposed indefinite curfew in Dhubri district to keep situation under control.
Night curfew has already been in force in Dhubri since violence broke out in Kokrajhar and the adjoining districts in July.
